CE symbol

You know, that CE symbol, the one with a C-like E, that is in almost every non-comestible product (at least I haven’t seen any) and in their package as well.
I guess it means that the product has passed some quality test, but what kind of specifications does it comply? And more important to me, WHAT THE HELL DOES IT STANDS FOR??
I’ve been asking this to every person who may had the answer, but I ended up with lots of completely different theories, most of them hardly credible.
So, could you guys give me any clue?
Thanks a lot!

It’s alot like the United States’ Underwriters Laboratory symbol, UL, execpt that in this case it stands for Conformité Européenne, or EC. It translates to english as European Conformity.

It’s the same kind of deal as the UL, but with rules and regulations that are European based and stamped all over everything electronic.

Why do we see it over here? Thank world trade. Sometimes our UL shows up over there, and sometimes their CE shows up over here.

do a search and you should find a thread where it was asked and answered extensively.

Thanks han… er, sailor. It’s not like I just answered it or anything.

I thought I’d read it here somewhere too, but the search either came up blank or came up with ooodles of matches when I tried to find one. I saw it answered somewhere else and resorted to giving a fast version on what I’d read on it along with an exact description of the word that makes up the CE.

If there’s more here, on the SDMB, then great. I couldn’t find it for him/her though.

Thanks. It was kinda difficult but I found some answers. I’ll paste here what came up, perhaps I’m saving time to someone…
