Cecil cant ,can you???

This might seem as the wierdest question facing anyone , but beleive me a answer does exist.

What was the name of Archies dad ,Fred’s , Third cousin twice removed from Aunt shirleys side!!!

(Acrie as in Archie comics)

Im hoping atleast someone can answer this cause i had a bet with my friend and my $30 depend on it.

Cecil any answers???

Didn’t you ask this already? If no one knew the answer last time, they’re not going to know it now.

Opening another thread with the same assinine question is rather obnoxious.

I haven’t seen this before, but I’m going to offer some unsolicited advice. First, this question could really only be answered by someone very familiar with Archie comics, so it would make sense to use a thread title that would attract those people. Second, you probably would get better results if you found somewhere on the web where people obssessed with Archie comics could be found. The Archie Comics Message Board, for example, might be a good place to start.

Third, this is not the type of question that Cecil answers. He tries to entertain and enlighten the masses, not answer mundane trivia. Any decent researcher could hunt down an answer to this eventually, but the result is going to be something like “According to the Jan. 27th, 1975 strip, it’s Bob,” but that kinda sucks for selling newspapers. No enlightenment, no burning questions settled. In a word, boring.

Actually, the place to post this is at the SDMB, but probably at one of the other forums.

There are plenty of threads here with similar topics.
Like the ones on “missing comic strip characters”.

Also, there are a vast number with worse topics, such as “I feel so wasted”, and “Is it hot where you are today”.

As to friedo and waterj2, don’t let them discourage you.
They like to carp, although usually with a little more reason.

This is actually a tougher question to research than one would suppose.

I’ve just been to a half dozen Archie sites, and the only thing I turned up was Jughead’s full name: Forsythe Jones.

Here’s the links that seemed to lead on to other things, so you might start following links.

http://comicbooks.about.com/hobbies/comicbooks/msub34.htm

And the least valuable, the official site
http://www.archiecomics.com

Good hunting.

Actually, jayshah, the worst part about this question is that you appear you may already know the answer, but aren’t saying. That’s not good procedure in any case.

What’s the bet? A dispute over which of two names is correct? If so mention the alternatives, and the evidence for them. Or is it just a bet that someone on the SDMB (or Cecil) can answer it? If that’s the case, that’s not a good reason to post it.

I agree. If you are certain an answer exists, than you must have at least some suspicion of what it is.

This forum is not designed for you to try to outwit people with stupid questions. What is your suspected answer to this question?

Well i REALLY dont know this answer to the question and im not that stupid enough and try and outwit ppl here.

I had a bet with my friend to ask me any question regarding archie comics and lay a $30 bet on it and he asked me and ive been trying various sites but could not find the answer so i decided to try here. He’s not given me any option.

Ill get to know the answer day after and will be short of $30 if no one knows the answer ,cause ive tried like shit to find it.

I know the answer, I’m just trying to figure what my take of the $30 will be.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm probably nuthing

It might interest you to know that the Archie TV show had only four voice actors.

Credited cast :
Howard Morris … Jughead Jones/Big Moose/Dilton Doiley
Jane Webb … Betty Cooper/Veronica Lodge/Big Ethel/Miss Grundy
John Erwin … Reggie Mantle
Dal McKennon … Archie Andrews/Hot Dog/Mr. Weatherbee/Chuck Clayton

Two possibilities here. First, your friend has dug through his collection of Archie comics and found one place in one comic where somebody mentions the name of Archie’s father’s third cousin twice-removed. This is not something like Jughead’s real first name (which is mentioned quite a few times, and in any case is actually of interest to Archie fans). This sort of question could only be answered by reading through every Archie comic. Why would we want to do that? We answer questions because we think that they are intellectually interesting. We don’t normally settle people’s bets (since we’re not getting a cut of the bet), just like we don’t answer homework questions (since that’s cheating).

The other possibility is that your friend is making fun of you. He has made up a question that he knows has no answer just to see how much time you will waste trying to answer it (and then he plans to collect the $30 when you can’t answer the question). If that’s the case, quit wasting time on this so-called friend.

Well, we do often adjudicate on bar bets and the like, but generally on questions that are intellectually interesting. Like the one about whether a car hitting a wall at 30 mph is the same as hitting an oncoming car at 30 mph. That one went to three pages and was in Threadspotting. Various points were brought up, elementary mechanics was explained, heated debate ensued, relativistic aspects were briefly touched on, and the word of the NHTSA was invoked. In short, it was interesting.

Some people, myself included, actually like clarifying physics concepts for people. Reading through every Archie comic in search of a tiny tidbit is plainly boring except for the most devoted Archie fan. I propose that the message board I linked to would be a better place to find someone like that. See, here’s what they discuss there (extraneous detail about issue in question snipped):

For $30, that (or anywhere similar) is where I’d look. Maybe I just need money more than you.

The problem is that you took a sucker bet. Archie has never been known for it’s continuity. Moose’s last name has changed from Manson to Mason to Williams(?) and back, for example. Mr Lodge’s first name has been changed at least twice (I think they’ve settled on Hiram).

Archie, especially in the 50’s-60’s had scads of relatives, none of whom had any connection to each other and none of whom ever showed up more than once. If the character was a one-shot, it’s hopeless, and the way you’ve described it, there may even be multiple correct answers (this is a series where Betty’s older brother became Betty’s older sister with nary a word).

Option 1: Make up a name. Then make him prove you wrong. Demand to see the issue. Be prepared to pay if he has the issue handy. He probably does.

OR (and you can’t do this if you do #1, 'cause he’ll demand that you prove it and you’ll be outta luck)

Option 2:
Offer a double or nothing bet to keep your money. A few questions you could ask in return:
What were the names of the two Martians who kidnapped Little Archie? (Ambercrombie and Stitch)
What are Martians scared of? (snakes)
What was the name of Maaaad Doctor Doom’s(no relation) assisstant? (Chester)
What MAJOR comics artist from the '70s got his start drawing Archie comics (Neal Adams)
What was the name of the cat that Betty had as a child (Caramel)
What contagious ‘disease’ did Jughead get, at least twice? (Rhyming sickness: he’d start talking in rhyme, and then, to their horror, others would too)
Before Big Ethel was created, there was an earlier “ugly girl” character. What was her name? (Ophelia Glutenschnabble)
What was the name Archie went by in early issues of Archie? (“Chick”)
What did Jughead have to do to become a Super-Hero? (Rub his hat and recite something like "Teeny-Weenie magic beanie/pointing towards the sky/give me muscles, stregnth and vigor/make me a super-guy!)

Good luck

Fenris

I don’t like the The title to this stupid question: “Cecil can’t, can you?”

Cecil can, he just doesn’t want to be bothered with moronic questions.

Neither do we.

Do you think the words “Don’t Be A Jerk” don’t also mean “Don’t Be A Condescending Jerk”? They do. Jerks that “claim the high ground” are some of the biggest jerks here.

friedo took it upon himself to post twice on this topic. Both times not to help but to criticize. Why? Just to see your name in print scorning someone? If no one was interested, the thread (and any repeats, no matter how hopeless) would simply sink to the ocean floor in minutes.

And disgusting as friedo is, Clairmont is even more disgusting to me, since he is just piling on after the insults have been delivered several times over. Why was that? The OP has left the thread. So I guess you are trying to impress the rest of us. Don’t count on it.

Has it occurred to you that the Imperial We you are using doesn’t apply to the rest of us?

If you don’t like the question, just don’t answer it.
Why do the rest of us have to be subjected to seeing someone pummeled for asking EXACTLY the kind of question CECIL just reported on this week.

Oh, I guess all you look-down-your-nosers think you seem intelligent by crabbing about the question, but to me you are simply BEING PETTY. AND WRONG.

If you’ve never read the Cecil column, I’d suggest you try it now. Today’s page features In Gilligan’s Island, what was Mrs. Howell’s first name?

It also has an answer that can only be found in one single episode. It also was to settle a bet. It also was considered worth pursuing by Cecil, despite the fact that the writer may have had an unrevealed name in mind.

AND CECIL ANSWERED IT. AND WAS SO PROUD OF IT HE REPOSTED IT YEARS LATER.

So get off your high horses before you fall off.

Fresh from the cloning thread and a half-cocked attack on WIGGUM? Twice in one day?

As a fellow newbie, you really should cut people some slack- especially since using the word “moronic” on someone a few hours after missing a VERY simple joke yourself might strike someone as the “pot calling…”

Relax- everything’s alright!

But if you simply must tear into someone today (which is perfectly understandable- everyone gets that feeling) check out the BBQ Pit. There are people over there just asking for it!

Actually, it does. And since you decided to go on your little tirade, you have succeeded in converting this from a stupid open thread to a stupid closed one.

Sorry about that, jayshah. Feel free to thank Gnarly Narly Dude in the BBQ Pit.
