Cecil, How Much Dirt Do We Eat?

If anyone would know this, Uncle Cecil (or the SDopers) would be sure to know! They claim a little dirt won’t kill ya, and supposedly we eat so much dirt a year. So, just how much dirt do we consume? - Jinx (Not looking for a new delicasy.)

Not to get picky, but the question needs a bit of clarification. By dirt do you mean soil (weathered rock particles) or generally that which is dirty (“my carrot fell on the floor and now it is dirty”)? In the case of the former, probably eating lots of dirt won’t hurt you so long as you aren’t cosuming, say, shards of obsidian or arsenic-rich soil. Micro-organisms in the soil are a different matter, especially coliform bacteria which are frequently present in farm soils.

Even if you recklessly ate scads of skins-on tubers on a regular basis, your total dirt intake would only be a few grams a day at most unless you were a complete slob. 2 to 3 kg per year would be a liberal estimate. Less if you are compulsive, more if you live on a dirt road or other source of airborne dirt. Keep in mind that those spuds are largely made out of dirt anyway.

As for how much household and industrial debris we consume much would depend on what country you live in, your domestic cleaning habits, etc. Given that the specific gravity of most organic household dirt is less than one, even if you ate five times as much dust as you did soil, it would still only amount to a couple kilograms a year. Of course depending on what you ate you might not live long enough to consume that much.

Some people more than others…
