Cecil's Cadaver info

Cecil,

My grandmother’s uncle’s body was sent to university of tennessee in the early 1920’s or 30’s. I was told he bartered for some cash. So when he died they took control of the body. We found out about this approx. two years ago through a distant relative found on ancestry.com. Here’s the question: Do you think they took pictures of these corpses before cutting them up and cremating them? I’d love to see what my great grandmother’s brother looked like. It’s important!

Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards, Diane, we’re glad you found us. When starting a thread, it’s helpful to other readers to provide a link to the column you’re comenting on. Saves searching time and keeps us on the same page. In this case, I assume it’s: How do you donate your body to science? - The Straight Dope No biggie, you’ll know for next time.

The best way to go about looking for your relative is to write the U of Tenn Medical School and ask them. They may or may not have taken photos back then; they may or may not have taken photos of your great-grand-uncle; they may or may not have kept them. It’s pretty much an individual situation, so regardless of what we think they might have done, it’s best to ask directly. (Also, please be aware, photos of corpses – especially back then – may not be attractive.)

Anyhow, as I said before, welcome! And good luck with this!
