Celeb Hypocrites

Back when she was doing one of her talk shows, she berated Tom Sellick out of the blue for owning guns. As close as I can recall, her quote was, “Anyone who owns a gun should be put in prison.”

So yeah, I’d say that stance vs. her actions warrant the hypocrisy charge.

Found a transcript of the interview…it’s an NRA website. She does come off as a douche but I didn’t see the “jail” quote in there. Although on another page off the link (Rosie the Unabashed Hyprocrite) it does attribute her as having implied “all gun owners should be jailed”, but doesn’t provide a cite.

I recall seeing that live. I have never been so embarrassed for someone and mad at someone else at the same time.

Cite? From the references I can find, it seems to have been Lexus’s choice to fly the car to the U.K., not McCartney’s.

Also, even if he didn’t have it flown personally, how else was he supposed to get it? There would the “carbon footprint” of transporting the car, regardless of how he chose to do it. Or was he not supposed to want to own/operate a hybrid car at all?

To be fair, John has dramatically reduced his carbon footprint in recent years.

Are you serious? On a cargo ship like everyone else which has way less of a carbon footprint per car than an airplane. Do you think that Honda flies hundreds of thousands of cars to the US each year? He’d have to wait a few extra weeks for it but it would have saved huge amounts of energy. (Assuming the story is even true. This is the first that I’ve heard it.)

He shouldn’t operate it if the carbon footprint of transporting it via airplane is more than the difference between a non-hybrid high mileage car and a hybrid. At least if his true goal is saving energy.

She also threw an absolute hissy when other parents at her son’s school didn’t want to allow the body guard to have the gun on campus.

It’s the first I’ve heard of it too, but I was confused if it was the airplane that causes the offense or the general transportation of the vehicle that was the problem (like he shouldn’t buy global friendly items that aren’t available in his country).

The plane. In pollutants-per-mile-per-kilogram of cargo (or passenger) they’re far and away the least green form of transportation.

To Rosie’s credit, she has admitted her hypocrisy there. Instead, she’s a 9/11 conspiracy nut.

Yeah, the plane. It kind of illustrates why being as green as possible isn’t always so simple on the face of it. My girlfriend recently bought some blueberries. When they were almost gone she bought another box of blueberries and showed them to me. She paid a little more for them because they were organic or pesticide free or something. I pointed out to her that the non-organic ones came from Santa Maria (about 60 miles away) and the organic ones came from Chile. Which ones were more green?

IIRC, Washington Redskin’s player Dexter Manley admitted to being illiterate after doing some PSA’s about the value of an education.

In fairness, being illiterate he had no idea what a PSA was.

Why on earth does Rosie O’Donnell need a bodyguard? Does anyone care that much about her one way or the other?

…given the fact she raised the ire of the wingnut gun lobby, I guess I can see. But still, I can’t think of anybody sane who gives a shit about anything she says or does.

But that’s not hypocrisy. It isn’t hypocritical for a heroin addict to tell you not to do heroin, it isn’t hypocritical for a smoker to tell you not to smoke, it isn’t hypocritical for an illiterate to tell you to get an education. They know from personal experience how crappy it is, even if they can’t stop what they’re doing they know it’s wrong.

If we’re required to steer clear of politicians, there are still numerous celebs in the “Advocates for Family Values Who Engage in Illicit Sex” category. Steve Garvey was one of the first I ever learned about.

There are also celebs in the “Foreign Policy Hawks Who Avoided Military Service” category. John Wayne used to take some lumps on that score.

Then there are always old standbys like John Lennon- the types who sing about “no possessions,” but have hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal and rarely share any of it with the poor. (Pssst… Yoko, investing in real estate is NOT a charitable contribution!)

Dude, you need more yellow either way. I learned that in kindergarden!

Per Slate he relocates U2 business out of Ireland, so not to pay taxes, while telling the Irish gov’t they need to do more for Africa.

Bono is who I came in to post.
