Celebrities--Let's Guess Which Ones are Reading This

Drew Carey has got to be a 4 or 5 as well.

Didn’t Weird Al Yankovic quote Cecil recently? I could see him as a 4 or a 5

cazzle, Weird Al 'fessed up to being a lurker. Hi Al!

Jim Beaver (“Ellsworth” from Deadwood) is a 5. He’s posted here several times recently.

I’d be willing to bet that Penn Jillette swings through here on occasion. I’d give that a 4.5. In fact, most of the ‘skeptic’ crowd probably make there way here from time to time. So I’d make the following people a 4:

Ricky Jay
Michael Shermer
James Randi
John Stossel

I’ll bet there’s a lot of political pundits who make their way here on occasion, especially the younger ones who are heavy internet users with their own blogs and such. So I’d give the following people a 4:

Jonah Goldberg
Kos
Andrew Sullivan

Karl Rove lurks here. I know it. He reads where I post about the awful things I think he might do … then he does them. But even knowing this, I somehow can’t stop posting about the awful things Karl Rove might do.

I’m thinking that the guys at Williams Street (Adult Swim) probably hang out here. Hi, Brendan!

I’ve always believe that Stephen Colbert is on here. Or atleast someone from his staff. I’ll say a 4 for that guy. I bet a comic or two has been on here.

On a side note, I heard of a blogger who was getting traffic from deep within the Vatican late at night. He was fairly sure it was the pope. Wouldn’t that be sweet if the pope was a Doper?

My God! I’m a lapsed Catholic myself, but still I really, really hope the Pope isn’t reading these boards… The horror!!

Apropos of this, Jo Rowling has reported that she posted under an assumed name on a Harry Potter board for a while. She says she offered speculations about what would happen in the next books but that these were soundly rejected. It’s very clear that she reads Mugglenet fairly frequently.

Michael Moore is pretty much a shoe in for a 5.
IIRC, he never posted here, but got one of his buddys to start a thread about something. Anyone remember that one from way back in the mists of time?

I think British actor/commedian Stephen Fry would be a 4.

He’s smart, funny and a bit arrogant yet self-depricating at times. Would at least make a good Doper.

I have to wonder, seriously, about the likelihood of all these guesses (including my own). I mean, the internet is huuuuuge and there are thousands and thousands of message boards. Few, admittedly, that are as well moderated and overall intelligent as this one, but still, wouldn’t it be extremely hard for any one message board to rise above the fray and actually attract any particular well known individuals? Or do I underestimate how well known the SDMB is?

It’s not necessarily about being well known - most people stumble across it when they Google a particular kind of question, and here is where a lot of answers are found, even if it’s just Cecil’s online columns which may or may not to leading one to the boards. There’s no reason to believe a celbrity is any less likely to be here than anybody else.

Why don’t you post a thread about how awful it would be if Karl Rove was caught on video eating babies. You know, as a way to verify your hypothosis?

There’s plenty of celebs I’d like to post here, say, Kari and Scottie from Mythbusters, Kiera Knightly, Catherine Keener, Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci, Christina Applegate, Lucy Liu, Cree Summer, Grey DeLise, and Alyson Hannigan, to name but a few.

If you were a celebrity, would mention your internet haunts publically? I sure wouldn’t. And saying something is “statistically likely” implies that the two factors are independent of one another. I don’t think that they are. The same factors that may lead someone to be outstanding in their field (often leading to celebrity status) are often the sorts of things that causes one to like the SDMB. I mean, were you really shocked to learn that Weird Al reads the boards sometimes?

I don’t know how well known the SDMB is. But this board has been solidly established on the web since 1999. Unca Cece’s popularity guarantees a certain amount of people will check out the boards. And we had a little dose of internet fame with the whole “LoTR written by someone else” thread. I wouldn’t be surprised that over the past 7.5 years, many famous people have stumbled across the boards. There are a lot of outstanding message boards out there, but not so many general interest ones. Why wouldn’t some of them decide to stay a while? They’re probably just as curious about the candiru fish and the calorie content of an average ejactulation as anybody else.

Oh, yeah. And I give Tom Cruise a big fat rating of 1.

I image that the Lord of the Rings thread drew in quite a few authors. Kinky Friedman is probably a 5, along with Andrew Vachss. And I can see Bob Dylan at a 3.

Jon Cryer, currently playing Alan in “Two and Half Men”, certainly knows about Cecil and the Straight Dope, and could presumably browse the boards now and then.

Oops, forgot the rating.

Re Jon Cryer, I don’t know the man, but he impresses me as a very bright, very funny guy. Assuming he had time and the inclination, I think he’d fit right in around here.

I guess that would put him in category 4 on the OP’s list.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find the makers of Mystery Science Theater 3000 skulking about.

I’m…

Batman!

oh, com’on… it needed to be said
