Would it be possible to get a celebrity to come and make at least one post.

I mean there are “Teeming Millions” here. Surely someone here knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who could pass along the address of these boards and the StraightDope itself?
Well, first I better define “celebrity” better. By celebrity I mean a person who would be identifible to at least 5 (random) people if shown a photo of the person OR 10 people having heard of them if the name was posted.

How hard would it be to actually get someone here of that nature? I wouldn’t think too hard…after all, all the dopers have access to many resources. People here must know some celebrities, either through people or even personally. Again, the term “celebrity” is very, very versatile. So how hard would it be to get the word of boards.straightdope.com to them and ask them to post?

Do YOU (as in you there, reading this thread right now) know any celebrities that you could contact somehow or communicate with? Any you think would actually post here, in this thread, at least one post, and thus be able to be listed any time anyone starts another “Any celebrities here?” thread?
If so, try it. Let’s see how many celebrites we can get in this thread. No, yourself doesn’t count. :stuck_out_tongue: You know what I mean by celebrity.

Someone around here (or who used to be) is related to Val Kilmer (cousins, I think); I remember that. Eve has mentioned a few times that she’s interviewed many celebrities.

I’ve been dying for an “Ask the Celebrity” thread for ages, so I’m all for this thread. But I think the problem is that anything any particular celebrity said could backfire on them, so they might be skittish about admitting who they are.

The closest I could come is that I have the email address of the new rap/hip-hop artist, Chris Classic, and he’s responded to an email I sent him. But the address is on his website, so it’s not like it’s a big secret, and I don’t think he’s big enough for most people to know who he is.

I remember there was a poster here–might even still be around–who claimed he was someone we’d all recognize. Started a whole thread about it, IIRC. I don’t think he ever said who he was, though. Now, if I could just remember who that was…

I think Cecil Adams has already posted here quite a few times.

Are you referring to the thread by newcrasher I am the most famous doper ?
Although newcrasher never came right out and admitted it, he was obviously bullshitting.

There was also at least one post by someone claiming to be a member of the Box Tops, a group who had a couple of hits in the '60s (The Letter, Cry Like a Baby). He seemed credible.

Ah, that’s the one!

I think you are referring to the departed (from the boards) aha, who was in the band The Five Americans, who had a big hit in Western Union.

It is pretty well established that he was legit.

I know two pretty famous people very well, and am moderately acquainted with a couple more. But I don’t think any of them would think such a request was “cool.” I knew one of them before he was famous, and the other one is a close relative, so their fame has nothing to do with our relationship. I would fill uncomfortable making it so.

I could probably entice some horror writers whose names would be recognized by five Dopers, but they’d respond better to being asked something, rather than posting “Here I am, well, you asked for a celebrity”.

Ellen Datlow (who edits the Year’s Best Horror & Fantasy anthologies) kindly answered a Doper question awhile back, but I wouldn’t have asked her to just show up to be admired (or whatever might happen).

I would suspect we have celebrities posting here. I would also suspect they are perfectly happy being just one of the mob.

hi! I’m a celebrity. prolly lots of you would recognize me if you saw me in person. I played Buffy on that vampire slayer Tv show.

I’ve been chillin’ out with John here for the past couple of weeks and he showed this thread to me so i thought i’d post here. you know, we’ve just been sittin in front of the fireplace, sippin warm cider, takin walks in the woods and, ummm, stuff

Well, hay! it was very tiring slayin’ all those vampires and then there was that “last Summer” ordeal. think it’s easy bein a celebrity? anyways, sometimes a girl just needs a quiet place to feel all comfy and cared for, ya know?

Like tonight was totally awsome, dancin’ in front of the fireplace to “old land sine” or however you spell it.

Sorry, but John’s been keepin me real, uh, occupied, so I won’t have any time to answer a buncha questions.

ta-ta. oh yeah, here’s your new years smooch; smooch

Here I am, darlings, ask away! Anything you like. I have nothing to hide! blows kisses to adoring fans

~sigh. You mean I have to be legit? Not just a legend in my own mind?

…I’ll get back to you in a few years. I’ve got some work to do.

Many reasons this will not happen.

Assume a celebrity came on the board and did his/her little, “Ask The Hollywood Star” bit. Fine and good.

And a few months later, they get involved with a thread about goats and sex and the time they were in college and…suddenly the story is in The National Enquirer and people are pouring over every word, in every thread they have ever written.

So - seriously, do you think it will ever happen?

Plus, I have a strong suspicion there already are a few on the boards who are careful not to blow their cover, but do have some rather insightful, first-hand knowledge on certain topics.

What makes you think this?

Well, we managed to bring at least one scientist to this board to respond to his being called out. He was researching the colossal squid. Maybe it was just the one post though.

We got some guy coming into the pit claiming to be the guy involved in some Canadian scandal. I don’t know if we thought it was him or an pretender.
Probably more famous people would just ignore the “bad mouth them on the internet” method though. Actually considering all the bad mouthing that’s gone on I guess it’s an awful strategy.

Despite the fact that we’re a good board I think we just have too low of a profile to attract a busy celebrity not to mention that hundreds of thousands of people out there who would love this board but just have never heard of us. Maybe if we had more focus on the mission to fight ignorance. I don’t think a message board is an extremely effective tool against ignorance though.
Anyway my uncle a musician that some of you might know from the 70s. I bet he wouldn’t mind coming here. I’m not sure that I’d be happy about that though. I prefer to keep my real life and on-line life separate.

Croikey!

NOOOO!!! I’m kidding…

I worked for a major film studio for many years and sometimes I read things that only someone else who worked for a studio would know…plus I have lots of friends who are still in the industry, and I also met hundreds of celebrities…call it a “feeling”.

One thing that would interest me would be if the SDMB would allow a celebrity to have two accounts (contrary to the rules). This might allow someone to appear, for a brief moment or so, as their real self, but then disappear as their other assumed name. That might work, although I cannot think of many reasons anyone famous would want to do that.

I’m Spartacus.

Back when I was a lurker I remember that one poster claimed to be Richard Dreyfuss (Or some similar actor) and there was another who said he was Kelsey Grammar.

You’re Hank Azaria?? I would never have suspected.

I am among those who are sure we have well-known persons in our midst who clearly want to remain anonymous and are on the boards for just that reason. The boards are safer than a nightclub or talk show, people will be brutally honest w/ you w/o caring who you are, and no one can take a picture of you having a bad hair day and sell it to US magazine or another of that ilk. Should a celeb pop up and admit who they are, they’d be hounded by the lessers and enjoyment would be lost.
If I were famous, this is just the board I’d come to.
