I didn’t see it either way in the rules. The problem is, there are problems either way. If the date of a celebrity’s death is based on local time, but submissions are final by Chicago time, a player at 11pm 12/31 Chicago time could check news sites for Australia, New Zealand, and east Asia, note any deaths of minor celebrities that had already happened on January 1, local time, put them on their lists, and pick up some very easy points.

Since online news reports are usually updated, and generally only show the date and time of the last update, it might be impossible afterwards for us to verify whether the person was already dead by midnight Chicago time in violation of rule 3a, and even if it did turn out to be verifiable, the player could always shrug, play innocent, and just say, “OK, replace that person with my first alternate.”

Alex Trebek- Didn’t follow doctor’s intructions because they weren’t in the form of a question
Rudy Giuliani- Inexplicably forgets the 911 emergency number
Emeril- Bam! Runs into a wall
Tom Brady- Underinflates tires with dire consequences
Oliver Stone- Shot from grassy knoll
Donald Trump- Hair today, gone tomorrow
Rosie O’Donnell- Suffers stroke when discovering she accidentally voted for Trump
Teller- Dies in stuck elevator, for some reason unable to yell for help
Chris Christie- Dies stuck in traffic on George Washington Bridge
Miley Cyrus- Dies of exposure
Lisa Kudrow- Smelly corpse, smelly corpse
Jim Gilmore- Collapses and dies in streeet, weeks pass before anyone can identify the body
Stephen King- Scares himself to death writing his last book

Alternate-
Kim Kardashian- obit never published as researchers fail to figure out why she’s famous

Clean List:

Alex Trebek
Rudy Giuliani
Emeril
Tom Brady
Oliver Stone
Donald Trump
Rosie O’Donnell
Teller
Chris Christie
Miley Cyrus
Lisa Kudrow
Jim Gilmore
Stephen King

Alternate
Kim Kardashian

That would be against the rules:

I agree with this. It may have happened already. IIRC, a sports journalist died on the morning of January 1, 2013 in London. Was it already 2013 in Chicago? We don’t know. The two players who picked him in 2013 received points.

London is six hours ahead of Chicago.

Whitey Bulger
Fidel Castro
Doris Day
Bob Dole
Alan Greenspan
George H.W. Bush
Hugh Hefner
Henry Kissinger
Jim Lovell
Hosni Mubarak
Mort Sahl
Bhumibol Adulyadej
Chuck Yeager

Alternates:
Fats Domino
Dick Van Dyke

Yes. When the journalist died, it was morning in London. It may have been before midnight CST.

Thanks for pointing that out. I actually went back and forth on which I should list. I choose…poorly. :smack:

**This is an updated list:
**
Muhammad Ali
George HW Bush
Fats Domino
Joey Feek
Valerie Harper
Mike Ilitch
Clive James
Mary Tyler Moore
Ryan O’Neal
David Prowse
Leon Redbone
Mel Stottlemyre
The Amazing Johnathan

Alternate:
Shane MacGowan

Valerie Harper
Muhammad Ali
Lindsay Lohan
Fidel Castro
Scott Hall
Bob Barker
Amanda Bynes
George H W Bush
Jimmy Carter
Courtney Love
Sid Hartman
Keith Richards
Miley Cyrus

Alternate:
Sarah Palin
Justine Bieber
Dick Cheney

However, since neither poster who got points for Christopher Martin-Jenkins (the journalist in question) posted or revised their lists on 12/31/12, it’s clear that neither of them added CMJ to their 2013 lists after hearing of his death.

If I were the Death Master, I’d keep the rule that local time determines day/month/year of death, but probably add a rule that to collect points on a January 1 death occurring in a time zone ahead of CST, the name must be on one’s list by midnight 12/31 in the time zone that the person died in. IOW, if it were up to me, if you thought a New Zealander on your list might kick the bucket on New Year’s Day, you’d have to get your list in by early morning CST on 12/31.

I agree with this.

Hauntingly similar to last year’s list.

Jack Van Impe
James Dobson
Mike Huckabee
Peter Popoff
Ray Comfort
Terry Jones
Stanislaw Burzynski
Pat Robertson
Jim Bakker
Creflo Dollar
Robert Tilton
Kenneth Copeland
John Hagee

Alternates:
Joel Olsteen
Jesse Duplantis

Given the apparent theme of the list, presumably that’s Terry Jones the Koran-burning preacher, not Terry Jones the Monty Python member.

Well, obviously. You will be putting the Erik the Viking Terry Jones on your list a dozen years from now and still not getting the measly 16 points for him.

Wilko Johnson
Ian McKellen
Ryan Buell
Carrol Channing
Bobby Doerr
Marv Levy
Kirk Douglas
Billy Graham
John Glynn
Nancy Reagan
