Anyone remember, back in the sixties, when (Canadian) singer Robert Goulet sang "The Star-Spangled Banner before a ball game and FORGOT THE WORDS? I think it was the World Series.
Actually, I don’t find anything odd with Celine Dion singing “God Bless America.” Just because one is not a citizen of a certain country doesn’t mean that one can’t express good wishes toward it.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nicely the Dixie Chicks did The Star-Spangled Banner. I don’t remember hearing it done with harmony before, and I liked it.
Well, this struck me as odd, mostly for the line “my home sweet home” (emphasis mine).
I’ve got no problem with people of other nationalities singing patriotic American songs, but the lyrics of “God Bless America” imply a certain…oh, let’s say…residency requirement.
That said, the halftime show was the greatest display of eye candy since the premiere of “VIP”.
I thought about the fact that she was Canadian while she was singing. But the lyrics seemed appropriate except for possibly “my home sweet home” and Lindy mentioned above.
But the world is shrinking and many of the wealthy live in more than one country. Frankly, I’m just thrilled to find a Canadian who will still speak to us.
Is singing “God Bless America” common at football games? I don’t remember having heard it in previous years - so I was wondering why anyone was singing it at all, citizen or not…
I’m glad to see someone else mention the fact that CD is American. She didn’t have to become an American citizen, she was born that way.
Still, I thought she was going to sing the national anthem and I said to myself “Self, why would a French-Canadian want to sing the US national anthem?” But then she didn’t so me and myself shut the hell up.
And Neil Diamond did too. That was my point; Jews singing Christmas carols isn’t wrong, just a little wierd. Same as the Celine/ Super Bowl/ God Bless America thing.
