Top it off with Celine Dion and Willie Nelson

Okay, Celine Dion and Willie Nelson want to help out…great, but jeez, after all the artists who performed earlier in the show…Celine Dion and Willie Nelson are the climax, the pinnacle, the grand finale of the show?

My gf and I pledeged $100 for the recovery effort, what have YOU done, motherfucker?

Good for you, but what Philosophocles has done for the effort and his not liking Celine Dion and Willie Nelson for the show’s climax are totally unrelated. Why attack him for not liking the ending? It doesn’t make him any less patriotic or less of a caring human for thinking these two were a bad choice for ending the telethon.

Willie Nelson is one of the greatest performers this country has ever seen. And, from what I’ve heard, is patriotic as hell. Celine Dion, on the other hand…
peace,
JB

I rather liked it. This wasn’t the time for a grand finale blowout. Very low key. It seemed like some of the stars were having trouble keeping their composure.

…all right, a Canadian singing “America the Beautiful” did seem a bit odd. But she’s got the pipes for it.

Put my vote that they were beautiful renditions.

Celine came out of retirement for this.

And Willie is definately very patriotic.

Wow. You registered just to post that, huh? What a fantastic addition to the SDMB. I can feel the collective IQ rise as I type this.

Willie Nelson I have no problem with, I think he’s wonderful. (Though I would have much preferred to see him sans the all-star choir.) And I am just thankful as hell that Celine didn’t sing that awful Titanic song. Cheesy as it is, I would have just lost it.

My favorite part was the very end, when Willie rolled up a big fat one, lit it up, took a hit, and passed it over to Celine. Then, as they exhaled clouds of smoke in unison, they exclaimed, “God Bless America!”

Or maybe I fell asleep and dreamed that.

Dr. J

Yeah, you weren’t the only one who thought that, DoctorJ.

Ever read Kinky Friedman’s “Roadkill”? It’s a mystery with Willie Nelson. He wrote something that WN needed two buses while on tour: one for him and his band and the other to carry the dope.

I just wanna flame somebody!

But I feel you’re on the losing side on this one, my friend…

You can’t defeat lawless heathens by lighting candles and swaying to the music. If all the performers had been holding up loaded M-16s I would have been enthused.

Just for the record, I’ve donated to the Red Cross, three local firefighter companies, and a couple of other NYC relief causes. I just think the terrorist world must be laughing at us by now. Trust me, after Pearl Harbor, nobody lit candles and held hands, they bought more ammo.

Peace,
Doc

Well, when Celine came out to sing “America the Beautiful” my first though was “She’s not American!” but it faded as soon as she started singing. I thought it was nice that someone who isn’t even a citizen, and is in retirement with a new baby, came out to lend a voice.
I was expecting to hear the Star Spangled Banner though. I was kinda hoping Whintey Houston was backstage gearing up for it.

Oh, and I love Willie Nelson. I’ve noticed he isn’t out much but when there’s a fundraiser or X-aid (FarmAid, etc…} out comes Willie! He’s a rough old cowboy with an angel’s voice.

We had a known enemy after Pearl Harbor. The course of action was clear against a readily known enemy. The number of people killed wasn’t as great, we didn’t lose a center of commerce. The enemy is hidden. Money and aid is what’s needed at the moment, while the Powers That Be find our enemy and then go after them.

If you want to flame someone, how about having avalid reason instead of rushing in like psychotic Dennis Hopper from Blue Velvet and indiscriminately tossing insults around. The “don’t be a jerk” rule applies, even when flaming.

As I see it, you have no legitimate reason for attacking the OP the way you did, since as I’ve already stated, giving aid and not liking the end of a telethon are unrelated. I also don’t see a reason for you to call amulet an ignorant slut (and yes, I get the reference).

Coming in here, even the Pit, just to pick fights and stir shit is being a jerk. You want to flame? Wait till you have a reason.

Uh, did anybody here, by any chance, watch what was on PBS instead? Arthur Kent, armed with hidden camera, documenting the hardships placed on the Afghani people by the Taliban? Very sad and disturbing.

One can only stir shit after it has shitted, OK!

What the hell does that mean?

“The enemy is hidden. Money and aid is what’s needed at the moment, while the Powers That Be find our enemy and then go after them.”

Perhaps you don’t understand so I’ll spell it out…

THE ENEMY IS HIDDEN, BUT THEY’RE HIDDEN IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. QUITE FRANKLY, I DON’T TRUST THE “POWERS THAT BE” TO PROTECT ME FROM THE EASTER BUNNY.

I’m all for money and aid and have given plenty but as of 9-11 every American suddenly became a warrior, like it or not.
