Cell Phone Boosters

My cell phone has great signal strength throughout my house, except in the basement where I spend the majority of my time. We’ve all seen the advertisments on TV for the amazing Cell Phone Reception Boosters. Has anyone ever bought one, and do they really work?

I thought there might be something to them, until I saw that the same company advertised a little dealie to stick to the earpiece of your cellphone to shield your head from the electromagnetic waves so’s you don’t get brain cancer.

Caveat emptor.

Those stickers look like they cost about 5 cents in bulk. I have a really hard time imagining that if they worked cell phone companies would not install them on the phones in the first place.

I ahve the same problem in my new place. If I place my phone on the windowsill, I’ll get enough of a signal to receive texts and rings. Not enough for an actaul conversation, though, so I have to go out front and call the person back.

Personally, I’m gonna make my phone a tinfoil hat and see what happens. ;j

I have the same problem at my new place. I have to sit in ONE SPOT when I’m talking on my cell phone. If I get up and walk to the kitchen, or ANYWHERE, the signal breaks up, or the call drops.

I bought one of those cell booster things…and there was absolutely no change. I still have a designated phone spot, still can’t walk around with the phone.

Well, at least I only paid about $9 for it. :smack:

I asked the same thing a couple of weeks ago.

I’m a ham radio operator. These cell phone boosters don’t work. Your only option is to switch to another cell provider/phone where reception is good in your area. If you have a friend that has a cell phone that works well in your basement, switch to that provider and use the same brand of phone. It’s basically a matter of the frequency used, and where the cell phone towers are. I’m currently using a GSM phone with T-Mobile. Signal strength is marginal here, but adequate. Most cell phones just won’t work where I live. :frowning:

the site is down right now, but a local company advertises signal enhancers for cell phones. You plug them in a central location and it covers approximately a 3500 square foot area - but it’s only for non-GSM phones, as far as I know.

We have poor reception in our house, and we’re debating if we should wait and see if it gets better, or spend the $200 bucks or so on it. But if it gets better “on its own” ie, there is a new tower built, we’ll likely spend $500 for a plug-to-use-with-land-line feature instead. (you put your cell in the thing, plug it to a wall, and all land line phones can make calls using cell minutes - great if you have unlimited night and weekend with no long distance charges)

Get an external antenna like the ones they use for cars. It will plug into the back of your cell phone and is quite powerful. Works for me. We live in an apartment that is concrete and steel. No reception here, but the external antenna works inside the apartment.

That will jsut keep the aliens from reading your mind.

I have used these little stick-on boosters before and never had the slightest benefit from them. Go with one of the old (can get them new also) Motorola 3-Watt “bagphones”. Get a decent antenna, you can even get an in-line booster for these. If theres a cell tower in your hemisphere (exaggeration) you’ll get a fine signal.
