So does that make my “Pac-man” ring tone (the little ditty played when you start) “older school”?
When I got my latest phone, I finally decided that if I was going to be forced to get bells and whistles beyond “make calls” and “receive calls”, I’d get ones that I want. So I got one that doubles as an MP3 player, along with a data cable to transfer between PC and phone.
The fun part is that the phone can use any MP3 or MIDI file (and maybe some other formats) as a ringtone, provided that the file isn’t more than ~400K (not 100% sure on the limit, but that’s the biggest file I’ve used). And since I’ve got the data cable, I can push the files directly to the phone instead of having to pay download fees. So I went on a spree where I used my PC to download free midi files and clipped 10-30s snippets from my MP3 collection and use those for ringtones.
Right now I’ve got a few personalized ones, beyond my standard Pac-Man ring:
Girlfriend: “Friends” theme (she’s way into the show)
Brother: “Stones” from Ultima 5 (we were both big U5 fans as kids)
Friend #1: “Dueling Banjos”
Friend #2: “Mario bros” main theme
Friend #3: “Always look on the Bright Side of Life”
Any contact organized under “Work” caller group: Imperial March
Currently I have ‘Salty Dog’ by Flogging Molly as a general ring tone.
I have the software for my razor phone so I can put whatever I want on it as a ringer. I have been meaning to put some more music on it and set up different ring tones for different callers, but I have just been lazy about it.
I do rotate between Salty Dog, the Hawaii 5-0 theme, Masterpiece Theater theme, Gut Feeling (by Devo), Theme song to Brazil, and log from Ren & Stimpy.
I never buy ringtones. I usually make my own – either by editing an existing song I have in my collection to a short edited remix suitable to the task, or I write my own ringtone songs (which may or may not be ringtone-specific versions of larger songs I have written or am writing).
I made one from a wave file from “As good as it gets” when Jack Nickelson’s character is singing “Always look at the bright side of your life… Always look at the brighter side of your life…” with the piano tiddlybits and all.
[Emphasis mine.]
Are you stalking my tone?! I’ve actually had that for a bit, in a not-so-gracious nod to my neo-hippieism, but what I really want is one by David Lynch. Groovy.
I have a really pretty remastered version of that song in my mp3 collection. Actually, a few of them. Probably one of my favorite tunes, not just one of my favorite videogame ditties.
My phone goes whrrrr because due to a trip through the washing machine it no longer rings. One of my friends has the old Batman theme (BATMAN! dinnerdinnerdinnerdinner BATMAN!). One of the others has a ring tone that sounds like the battle-winning fanfare from Final Fantasy. (Deet-dada-dee-da-da-DEE-da-DEEEEEEE!)

I’m actually planning on purchasing a new phone this month. Can anyone suggest a good one for interesting rings? Preferably one with a datalink that I can hook up to my computer and upload mp3s and such to? I’m on the Sprint network, for whatever difference that makes.
I used to have the closest digital approximation to an old bell ringer. I miss those and can’t find any to put in my home. Then others started getting it, so I could no longer identify my phone from the cacophony around me. Now I use Starship Trooper by Yes. No problem identifying my ring.
General: the song of a Northern Cardinal
Husband: Billie Holiday singing “I Love My Man”
Mom: “Mother” by the Police
Brother: The Shaggs singing “All the boys with cars want motorcycles, and the boys with motorcycles want cars”
My brother-in-law: “Brothers in Law” by Loyko
His girlfriend Jen: “Jen Taught Me” by De La Soul
Work: “Day Job” by Todd Rundgren
Karate School and the individual senseis there: “Theme from Black Belt Jones” by Dennis Coffey
My phone is a LG VZ6000 and I love it because I can plug a cable into my computer and upload all these MP3 ring tones without having to pay Verizon lots of money for their crappy selections.
I imagine it would work even better with Sprint, because Verizon goes out of their way to cripple their phones and I don’t think Sprint does.
My ring tone sounds like a regular phone ringing. Dull, perhaps, but I always know it’s mine. There are any number of songs I’d like as ringtones, but I never feel like looking for them.
Hey, bouv, where did you find the CTU ringtone? I’ve been looking for that blasted thing everywhere on my phone’s ringtone programs. I have a feeling it’d get annoying after a while, but I still want it.
Same here! I’ve had it for about 2 two years now. Very few people call me, though, and most of the time when I’m out the phone is on vibrate, so I hardly ever get to hear it.
I just recently assigned my first personal ringtone: when my mom calls, I hear the opening bars of Abba’s “Mama Mia.” Only the title is appropriate, but it makes me smile.
I keep meaning to figure out how to make my KRZR play MP3s as ringtones: I downloaded an “867-5309 (Jenny)” ringtone for when my boyfriend calls, but I don’t like the part of the song it uses and I want to make my own.
I’ve downloaded a lot of the tones that have been mentioned in this thread, I’m just not using them for anything yet:[ul][li]The Hampster Dance[/li][li]Always Look On the Bright Side of Life[/li][li]The Addams Family Theme[/ul][/li]I also have “Little Saint Nick,” which will be my holiday ringtone.
I guess I’m the only person so far that doesn’t have a ringtone. I keep my cell phone on vibrate. That way I don’t have to worry about whether or not my cell phone is going to bother people at inappropriate times.
