One of my students turned me onto makeownringtone dot com (I have no relationship with the company, just used them successfully) and I created my own ring tone for my cell phone. Very easy to do…just upload your favorite song and “cut” the part of the song you want to use. Then follow directions.
My ring tone? It is Ethel Merman’s disco rendition of “There’s No Business Like Show Business…”
Regular callers = Join in the Chant - Nitzer Ebb
Wife = Girls Got Rhythm - AC/DC
For a short time on my wife’s phone, when I called it had a quote from the Transformers movie: “I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to all autobots.”…she made me delete it
Mine is the default ringtone on my phone, whatever that is. I keep my phone on vibrate 24/7/365. I don’t like when my phone ringing bugs anyone else, so I just let it vibrate me.
These days, strangers get the opening strains of “Born to Run”
Until recently they were announced with “Let the Sunshine”
My wife is announced by a boisterous rendition of “Aquarela do Brasil” sung by Gal Costa (It’s that song that goes “Brazil …blahblah… BRAZIL …blahblah… BRAZIL! …” that you always hear in movies that reference the country.)
I assigned “Águas de Março” (the Waters of March) for my sister-in-law
It’s “Born to Run” for everyone else.
BTW, I use Garage Band to make my own. I don’t know if it’s better than the online place, but there are lots of fiddly settings you can use to tweak it just right.
‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ by Poison. I used to have Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, but my son learned to mimic it exactly, sending me running for the phone, so I had to change it. Over the holidays I had ‘I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas’.
Another vote for leaving the phone on vibrate. For the occasion when I need the phone to be loud, I’ve been using the ring tone from Crank. I think I’ve had that tone since the movie came out.
“As If” by Sara Evans for the bf, and “Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon 5 for everyone else. I need to change these, since I’m terribly bored with them both.
Generic ringtone: Pantera - Walk (instrumental)
Fiancee’s ringtone: Tenacious D - Fuck Her Gently (she does not know this is her ringtone, and if anybody tells her I might have some parts missing the next time they see me)
My very short friend Tanya’s ringtone: It’s A Small World After All (from the Disney World ride)
My mother’s ringtone is Zara Dholki, a Hindi film song.
Various other friends/places have been assigned The Smashing Pumpkins’ Zero, Bubba Sparkxx’ Ugly, When In Rome’s The Promise, Canibus’ Take This Job and Shove It, Stone Cold Steve Austin’s entrance music, The Safety Dance, the Rocky theme, the Mission: Impossible theme, and that Dance Magic Dance David Bowie song from Labyrinth.
I tend to rotate my generic ringtone between the Fraggle Rock theme, Rob D’s Clubbed to Death, Axel F (the Beverly Hills Cop theme), and Ninja by 7 Seconds of Love.
I “make” my own ringtones using Motorola Phonetools’ Melody Editor, which has basic mp3 cropping facilities and simple effects like fade in/out.
