Cenk Uygur running for Pres

PS I wanted to post a transcript of some of Cenk’s reasoning on why the 5th and 14th amendments apply to his proposed challenge to the naturalized citizen exclusion, and why he thinks even the right wing court would rule in his favor - but there is no transcript, and turns out the dictation option on my Mac can’t handle Cenk’s verbal spew. But the gist of it is, it’s patently unfair, condemning a whole class of Americans to second class citizenship, which is legally forbidden although you have to sue to make that point, but you know who else couldn’t run for President under current understanding? Elon Musk. And Cenk insists good 'ol Elon will come to his defense, and who among the Six won’t defer to that? (Uh, that’s kind of a stretch I’ll admit.)

I think the only thing that naturalized citizens are unable to do that natural-born citizens can is run for president, so I don’t think that counts as “second-class citizenship.”

Spoken like a Natural Born. Maybe you should ask someone who came to this country from elsewhere, filed the papers, waited years, took the citizenship test and passed, got sworn in - ask them if the exclusion makes them feel second class.

Presumably they learned from the citizenship test that they could never be president and went through with the process anyway.

Personally, I’d be fine getting rid of that requirement, but it would have to come from a constitutional amendment, not a court case.

It’s a court of law, not a court of fairness.

Are you expecting us to be helpful to Cenk or to you?

Okay, I’ll ask one such person. They said that it doesn’t make them feel second class.

You could be right. Anyway I doubt anything Cenk does will alter the status quo, unless Elon and Arnold and a couple more high-profile heavy hitters sign on, which they won’t.

All the “heavy hitters” in the entire country could sign on and it wouldn’t matter at all. The only way I see the natural-born citizenship requirement changing is via constitutional amendment.

Well there you go, the one person you didn’t ask is cool with it, case closed.

Should I ask a moderator to close the thread?

Please. I tried to keep this about Cenk, people insist I explain why he thinks he can beat the stricture, I re-listened and gave it my best shot, happy to drop the subject.

Wait! Not before I unsubscribe from the young turks youtube channel!

That’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

It seems his application to the Nevada ballot has given him a controversy he could use to push this into court.

All he needs to do is sue the Nevada elections authority to force them to allow his application to the ballot. Outline his reasoning to the district court. Then, file an appeals with the Ninth Circuit, once the district court throws it out. Finally, request a grant of cert from the Supreme Court once the Ninth Circuit throws it out. (And yes, the lower courts will throw it out.)

It’ll cost some lawyer time, of course, and $$, but if he really thinks he’s got a valid argument here, he should put up or shut up. Time’s a-wastin’.

True, but it was Allied not Soviet. So, no he does not qualify, but Congress could make a law that he did.

Thank you for this. I expect this is exactly his expectation when he crossed out “natural born” on his application. He probably already has lawyers in waiting, ready to pull the trigger. Expensive, yes; futile we’ll see.

Okay, using his Nevada application as a test case to challenge the natural-born requirement would be interesting, even if his candidacy is otherwise far-fetched.

Futile, we know. Right now he can’t run because he is, without question, constitutionally unqualified to run. His opinion doesn’t matter, the opinions of all his followers don’t matter. If he has lawyers that are minimally competent they will tell him that the SCOTUS is not going to jump through that many hoops in time for him to run. The difference between Cenk Uyger and Pat Paulsen?
Pat Paulsen was legally qualified to run.

Pat Paulsen’s presidential ambitions were a joke.
Cenk Uyger is a joke.
