When did Edmonton learn to play football? They’re walking all over Calgary. It’s 28-13 Edmonton, with 10:40 left in the 4th. Calgary has the ball, and excellent field position, but they’re struggling.
Yes, it was rumoured that the game would be cancelled/postponed because of the smoke. Heck, it delayed the start of local horse racing, and threatened to cancel today’s race card totally.
And Calgary wins! It took them three quarters to wake up, but once they did, they reminded me of the NFL’s New England Patriots during the Brady years: the first three quarters are just a formality; we’ll get down to business in the fourth quarter.
In other news, the game began with a tear-jerking memorial to George Reed, a Rider legend who died this week aged 83.
Born in Mississippi, college in Washington, then joined the Riders in 1963. Played for the Riders for 13 years as a RB. As part of the George and Ronnie show, he led them to their first Grey Cup in 1966.
His stats were impressive with three career records;
rushing yards: 16,116
rushing touchdowns: 134
touchdowns :137
His total rushing yards has since been passed by Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith in the NFL and by Mike Pringle in the CFL.
Pringle also tied Reed with a total of 137 career touchdowns, a record which was later broken by Milt Stegal.
Reed still holds the CFL rushing for touchdowns record at 134.
Reed also contributed to the community for the rest of his life. He made Regina his permanent home and gave his time and support to junior sport, Special Olympics, and schooling for kids in need.
Not sure where I’ll be watching the Big Game. I was planning on watching it at the local race book, and playing horse racing at halftime (I have no interest in Green Day), but a friend mentioned last week that he was trying to get a bunch of folks together to watch the game at his favourite sports bar. Well, there’s plenty of time to figure all that out.
Regardless, if Toronto makes it, there’s only one thing to say:
Yeah. The Argos played as if it was a foregone conclusion that they’d win. Until that interception early in the first quarter, that Montreal ran back for a TD, when the Argos realized “Holy shit, Montreal means business.” And Toronto just couldn’t manage playing an opponent who really, really, really, wanted to win this game.
Meh. I’ll still watch the game next week, with friends at the sports bar (not the race book), and I’ll put $5 on the squares game, and hope I win a nice door prize. But it’s going to be more about socializing with the guys than it will be caring about the game.
Hey, beer, pizza, football, and a bunch of great guys to spend the afternoon with. Nothing wrong with that. Looking forward to it!
