CFL 2023 season

Yeah, we came soooo close. Our O-line really needs work. Just a couple of plays different, and Ottawa wins it…Sigh.

Again, a really good end game. Stopped posting because it was on a knife edge.

But there was a lot of critical commentary on the stands about the Riders going for their down on their own 25 yard line, when they had a two point lead. In what game theory does that make sense? Especially when they hadn’t made two previous third downs. Fortunately, the Riders D was able to hold Ottawa to a field goal, but that could have been the game.

Edmonton Elks post 1st win of the season! Snap a losing streak dating back to last season! They have the Grey Cup in their sights!

(Well, two out of three ain’t bad…)

They « improve » their season to 1-9.

Plus an hour and a half thunderstorm delay, so 2nd half didn’t start until 10.30 pm local time.

Yes, and it was interesting to watch the talking heads try to fill the time. Plenty of commercials, of course, and first half highlights, and other games’ highlights, player interviews, weather updates, weather maps; and finally, with little else at hand, a featurette on the Toronto Argonauts.

Still, good for Edmonton. They sure brought their A game, while Hamilton struggled to find their D game. Looking forward to this week’s games.

And the Riders, with their 3rd string QB, defeated the BC Lions, who are 1st in the West. Huzzah!

Labour Day Classic in Regina!

Riders lose the coin toss: Bombers elect to receive: Riders do a short kick to open the game; Lauther recovers his own kick.

Drive peters out, but interesting start.

Not much happening, but Riders 13-10 at end of the half.

This reminds me of listening to games as a kid, on my crystal radio set!

Ach! Riders make a great stand on their 10 yard line. Going to 3rd down for Bombers. And then a stupid Rider, after the flag, bangs Winnipeg QB helmet to helmet, just for fun, knocking him down.

Bombers 1st down, half the distance to the goal, and of course make a TD.

Bombers take a knee in the end zone. 3 point game, Bombers up.

With an onion on your belt?

Riders trying to get into field goal range to tie.

Did it! Ball on Bombers 40.

Morrow runs to 15 yard. Looking for TD.

Nope. Knockdown and now a FG attempt - Good! 24 all, 31 seconds on the clock.

Riders shut down Wpg Now OT . 2 mini games.

Morrow snags and runs; down on the 1 line

Picton runs it in Riders TD

Going for 2 - and got it! Riders up, 32-24.

Long throw by Wpg - TD!

Going for 2 - misses! Ford for the Riders got a hand on it.

Riders win the Labour Day classic!

Woohoo!! Thanks for the show!

Old Al Ford must be a proud granddad today. Ford was a key player for the Riders back in the 60s and 70s, then the GM for the team.

Yesterday, on the final play of the game in OT, Winnipeg QB managed to get a pass off just as he was about to get sacked.

A young Rider, in his first CFL game, who came in late in the game to fill in for an injured player, managed to jump up and get his hand on the ball. He tipped it just enough that it wobbled and didn’t reach the WPG receiver in the end zone.

The kid was Jaxon Ford, Al Ford’s grandson.

A Tale of Two Cities

When I googled “Riders Labour Day Classic”, I got these two headlines as the top hits:

Regina Leader-Post: “Roughriders defeat Blue Bombers 32-30 in Labour Day Classic”

Winnipeg Sun: “Riders’ Robertson suspended after head butting Bombers Collaros during Labour Day Classic”

Next up: the Riders go to Winnipeg next week for the Banjo Bowl. Should be an interesting game.
