I don’t know if you’d call it a game for the ages, but it was sure odd to watch.
Natch, I want the Riders to win, but by the end of the 3rd quarter, when the Riders were up 42-7, it was starting to get a bit embarassing for all.
However, the oddest comment came from Bombers coach Mike Kelly. After losing 29-14 to the Riders last week, and 55-10 this week, he says that the Bombers are pointed in the right direction (Blue Bowl-ed Over). I’m having trouble parsing that one.
The article points out that yesterday’s drubbing ties the Bombers’ record for the worst point spread in their franchise history. The last time they lost a game by 45 points was sixty years ago, in 1949, when they lost 45-0 to … well, we won’t mention the team that beat them that time. At least this time they managed to get some points on the board.
Oh well, let’s see how it goes next week for the Riders against Edmonton, who just dropped back-to-back games against the Stamps and have slipped to third in the West.
Just curious- are any teams eliminated in the regular season? On the CFL website, I see the schedule has 3 rounds of playoffs but only 5 games shown. So do 6 teams or 8 teams make the playoffs?
In other words, eight teams play an 18-game season to eliminate two teams, and give two other teams a bye.
It would be a bit more competitive if there were a couple more teams in the league, but Ottawa folded a few years ago, and Nova Scotia hasn’t been able to put together a group willing to try to start a team.
And just to add to borschevsky’s summary - there is a cross-over berth. If the fourth ranked team in one division has a better ranking than the third ranked team in the other division, it gets to cross-over and play as the # 3 team in the other division play-off. The third ranked team doesn’t make the play-offs.
That’s a real possibility this year, because B.C. is currently the fourth-ranked team in the West Division, with 8 points in the standings. Winnipeg and Toronto are currently tied for third and fourth place in the East Division, with 6 points each. If one of them doesn’t manage to pull even with B.C. by the end of the regular season, they’re both eliminated and B.C. would cross over to play the #2 team in the East, which is currently Hamilton.
[team spirit]None of that matters anyways. The Als are taking it home this year, dammit! Unless they end up playing against BC, in which case the zebras will give it to the Lions regardless of what happens on the field. [/team spirit]
I only watched part of the Riders-Blue Bombers game since I was in and out of the house, but yeah, it was rather embarrassing, wasn’t it?
I’ve been watching both NFL and CFL games this year, and I actually think I prefer the CFL (I know - that’s blasphemy on this board, isn’t it?) I really know next to nothing about the sport (couldn’t name all the player positions to save my life) but I’ve noticed that the game is so much faster, things seem to change more quickly, and the strategy is so different. The CFL quarterbacks are so much more likely to run with the ball, which always makes for fun plays to watch.
The 3-7 Winnipeg team? The ones who are currently 0-2 against Montreal? In a home game against the Als who are 8-2, although everyone knows that’s really 9-1 this season, and are 5-0-0 at home?
