General question: Can the CGI script be altered so as to issue its confirmation before attempting to update the database but after it has received the text of the message? This might cut down on the timeouts and consequent double-posts.
I had the same problem with slow posts and time outs today.
When I went to search for my post, it didn’t *seem * to be there. I sighed and tried my best to reconstruct it, thread links and all, but then I noticed the “long thread” notice at the bottom where the “thread recap” should have been.
It wasn’t lost, but had triggered a page 2 for the thread, and was hiding there.
What a relief, but **your suggestion would be a lot better! **
And save us from double posting out of insecurity.
Just because you’re insecure doesn’t mean you don’t get hosed by web sites a lot (and I don’t mean this one- others ).
I don’t know if this was a good thing to do (so I’m ready to be slapped down if not) but I had a similar problem tonight. I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more, and then doing some more waiting, for the post I’d just completed to be added to the thread (the screen was hanging after clicking “Submit Reply”).
Opening a new window (from another one I had open elsewhere), I took a look and my post had already been added. I just quit the ‘hanging’ page. The post seems to have been added almost instantaneously after I hit the button, despite it’s subsequent lack of activity.
Been doing it all week. My faith in the CGI has been sorely tested, but yea, verily, I still believe! Posts have miraculously appeared where those of little faith said there could be none, even unto the complete disconnection from the Internet. Amen, and amen.
