Very good, cheers! The quote comes from the beginning of the movie, when Cary Grant is caught stealing gasoline off the Royal Australian Navy dock being shelled by the Japanese. Lt Stebbings is reporting to his CO, played by Trevor Howard.
I saw it with my dad and older brother too, when it came out right around Christmas. The phrase “pinching our petrol” has stuck in my mind ever since.
I know. I saw it then, too. It’s not very big or famous now, though.
As a book I read once put it – Remember Cavalcade"? I’ll bet even most movie buffs don’t, but it won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1933 and was a huge financial success. “The movie of a generation”, claimed the movie posters.
Few things that were au courant in 1963 are, except for people like you and me.
