If you don’t I would be shocked. Much in keeping with the line you shared, though. But it’s a scene that I think pretty much everyone who appreciates movies would enjoy, even if they don’t see the whole film (not sure if I’ve seen the whole film TBH… anyway)
“I’m not supposed to do this! You should never jump from a moving truck! Why, I shouldn’t even be standing up!”
"You have my permission! Just this once. Now, c’mon!"
I know it’s a Steve Martin line, and from early in his career. I didn’t really think it was from The Jerk, but I can’t really remember where it was from; maybe one of his albums or TV specials. It doesn’t sound right for Pennies From Heaven or Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. I suppose he could have snuck it into one of his later movies as kind of an Easter Egg.
There was some discussion upthread of movies that have no unmemorable lines. I saw a movie that would almost qualify, but I think I found one unmemorable line in it.
“Look. If you did your cheekbones better, you could look like Cher.”
“Anybody else want a limp?” was 48 Hours (or another 48 hours). Then Lucas_Jackson said that line reminded him of the “you still got too many teeth” line.
Nobody’s gotten this one. The movie might be considered non-famous; and, anyway, it’s an obscure line in the movie. (I did not remember the line – I skimmed through a subtitle file. Do others do that? Or is my approach deprecated?)
Another line from the same movie may be a give-away for anyone who’s seen and remembers the movie:
. . . . . . . . . “Would you call me Pamela tonight?”
Here are some comments and hints:
(1) It’s a relatively old movie, but I was already a teenager when it appeared. It was a low-budget box office success, has a 7+ IMDB score and is the sort of simplistic tearjerker that sometimes appeals to me. But it received no major awards(*) and critics rejected it as “unrealistic.”
(2) I was surprised just now to learn that a Part II for TV was produced decades after the film, with at least three of the main actors from the original.
(3) (Please spoiler your answer if you click on this clue.) One reason I like the movie is its title song, which made it to the Top of the Billboard chart. * - There were complaints that the film did not receive an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
