Challenge! Who is the man sitting with all the stars on Johnny Carson?

Not Mike “Touch” Connors.

Nope.

Sort of looks like David Frost but I don’t recall him with hair like that, and I couldn’t find a picture. It could almost be Hal Holbrook who won an Emmy in 71, but it’s just not right. Burt Bacharach maybe, sorta, but also not quite right. It’s not Jim McKay, but somehow it reminds me of a an ABC sportscaster and Wide World of Sports won that year too.

Sid Caesar?

Ding! Ding! Ding! I think we have a winner!

No way.

It totally is Sid Caesar.

Show me a picture of Sid Caesarthat looks anything like that.

It’s not Sid. My first thought was Rod Taylor because of the hair, but I don’t think it’s him either – the mouth isn’t right.

I’ve looked through five years of Tonight Show episodes, 1969-1974. In none of them do all these people appear together and a few of them don’t appear at all in some of those years.

That’s way too many guests for one show anyway, so was this a publicity photo for award winners?

Yup. David Frost. 22nd Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by him and Danny Thomas.

Here he is same year from a different angle. Note the same direction of the hair part too.

Still investigating but Jack Klugman is my best guess so far.

Cool!

I’ve looked and looked at Google Images of David Frost and I just don’t see it.

My nominee is Joey Bishop. There are images from around that time frame where he looks a lot like that picture. His nose has the broadening at the tip that the mystery guy has.
Plus, other than the regular guest hosts (Joan Rivers, etc), he hosted Carson’s Tonight Show more than anyone else.

I wasn’t convinced it’s David Frost, although I know a photo can capture an instant when someone doesn’t look quite like he usually does. It’s that closed-mouth smile that throws me.

I was gong to say that he was British, from the forward size of the bow tie and very correct clothes (compared to Robert Young who looks like he got lost on the way to his prom).

I’ve been looking at a lot of photos of Frost online, and here’s one that is pretty convincing, though - same hair and nose. It may be that he was never photographed from that angle except on this occasion - and never with that kind of smile.

Dick Cavett was my first guess, but the nose is definitely wrong. I’ll go with David Frost too.

Peter Mark Richman. Sorry I don’t know how to link it.

Peter Mark Richman

I’m thinking you’re right.

I dunno maybe, I never realized how hard it is to find a left side profile of a celeb!

Peter Mark Richman.
Sid Caesar.
