The name Peter Mark Richman is unfamiliar to me, but the mystery man does bear a resemblance to the photos in his link earlier. All the rest of the guesses I’ve seen here are ludicrously bad, obviously from youngsters who did not grow up watching those people.
Well, I’m starting to come around to the possibility of Sid Caesar. His photo here does resemble the mystery man a bit.
Yeah, now I’m beginning to wonder myself. Richman has the same basic appearance and somewhat curly hair, but in none of the Google photos does his smile look the same.
I’m beginning to wonder if the mystery man is an actor at all. Seeing as how he’s seated in the most prestigious spot next to Carson and most of the others seem to be paying respectful attention to him I’m thinking that he might have been the show’s producer or director.
I was thinking he looked a little like John Boorman. He directed Deliverance, which was a nominee for G.G. or Emmy around that time. I can’t find a younger picture of him though.
Could someone please tell me how to post photo links here?
When you press the Reply button, in the row of tool icons above the box you type in, there is an Insert Link icon. (It looks like the Earth with 2 links of a chain over it.) This brings up a dialog box into which you can paste the URL of your pic’s web page.
If you do this while you have some text in your post highlighted, it will make that text
the link.
Thanks!
Not anyone with regular straight hair. Thats wavy hair they tried to set down for the Emmy’s.
So
- wavy hair
- curved down , long thin nose
- quirky smile … doesn’t look standard … smile line is one big > down the face, down to the jaw
- seems to be narrow eyes (But hard to tell side on…)
The Emmys were on June 7, 1970
Gene Wilder appeared on the Tonight show aired June 12. 1970, where Johnny was absent, presumably because he was busy with the Emmys.
I know it’s not, but to me he looks like Jonathan Harris (Dr. Smith) from Lost in Space.
Joel Grey perhaps.
I never would have gotten James Brolin and Karen Valentine.
No way is Joel Grey taller than Robert Young, unless he’s sitting on a couple phone books.
He’s a left profile of David Frost. I don’t think it’s him - DF’s hair was different and he’s more jowly.

Boy, I’ll say!
I wish I could contribute a guess of my own. There’s certainly something familiar about him, but I’m stumped. So the best I can do is concur with you; it’s very clear who this guy is NOT!
On Peter Mark Richman’s Facebook page, his daughter, Kelly, denies it’s him. It’s a good guess, though. My first quick glance made me think “young James Whitmore?” but no, I doubt it.
There is no way that is Joel Grey or James Whitmore.
I’m thinking the guess of one of the show’s producers makes sense. He would be in the place of honor, and while the guests did often scoot down the couch to make room for the next one, they were never all the way backed up to behind the couch. So maybe this was a staged photo op that was not part of the regular airing.
Several times I have seriously wondered if people are looking at the correct person. It’s the guy on the far right (as we look). Right?
It’s definitely David Frost. Because if it is I win the internet!
Actually, the hair still looks off to me. And yes, for all the pictures I looked at left profiles are hard to find.
Not David Frost.
It’s definitely NOT David Frost. I watched his show TW3 every week and I know what he looks like. It’s not him.
Glen Campbell looks more like David Frost than that guy.
My first thought was that it looks like Hans Conried.
