Chanel no. 5 - is there anything like it?

Hi, lately I’ve been responsible for the creation of some rather girly-topic-ed threads. So my apologies for that but to get right to the question:

Are there any “knock-off” fragrances on the market that smell just like Chanel no. 5 perfume, but don’t say that on the bottle? The price of this stuff is astronomical and since it’s not for me, I’m hesitant to invest so much into a typical Chanel no.5 edp 3.4 oz bottle.

Does anyone know of anything that smells pretty close?

umm, any women still wear this stuff?

Wiki article

When I saw the title, I was wondering if this is the female equivalent of Old Spice. :stuck_out_tongue:

As recently as 2008, it was still listed as “one of the top 5 best-selling fragrances, everywhere in the world*” (The Perfect Scent, by Chandler Burr).

And in the 1980’s, Time magazine said that it was the profit from sales of perfumes that kept Chanel (and other big fashion houses) afloat.

  • Apparently, popularity of most fragrances varies greatly by area; what sells in the USA may not sell in the Middle East, etc.

There’s really no knock off like Chanel No. 5 that I have found. Have you tried the elixer, though? It has the same fragrance, but is a dab on oil. It is cheaper than the EDP and smells just as good.

No. 5 is a classic, isn’t it?

I once had a tiny, tiny, teeny bottle of it.

It smelled expensive.

It survives and thrives as a unique fragrance.

It gets sold to millions of guys who are about two months into a relationship and want to give the girl something nice but don’t know them well enough to buy them a fragrance that really suits them. Chanel No 5 will smell good on almost every woman, and since it’s expensive the girl knows that the guy dropped some coin on it. Everyone is happy (except the professional husband-shopper who already has 6 bottles in the cabinet from previous guys).

It has also withstood the test of time as one of the most difficult fragrances to duplicate. Exclusivity plus quality means sales remain strong through the years.

How it came to become such an iconic fragrance is another story I would guess.
