Change in government in Nigeria

Goodluck Johnathan is out (see my 5 year old thread “Predictions: the President of Nigeria” for an account of his rise to the President’s seat).

Apparently the people were dissatisfied with on going corruption in his administration. With the NYtimes addingthat people were also annoyed from the government’s inability to contain violent Islamic extremists in the north (Boko Haram). [

](Muhammadu Buhari, ex-dictator, defeats Goodluck Jonathan in Nigerian election | CBC News)The incumbent Muhammadu Buhari is a Muslim Nigerian from the northern Fulani ethnic group (Johnathan was a Christian from the southern delta Ijaw group). What’s interesting is that Buhari is a former military dictator of Nigeria (he controlled the country for ~1.5 years in the early 80’s), 72 years old, and the first opposition leader to gain power by democratic elections -previously the ruling People’s Democratic Party won all presidential elections (since elections were reinstated in 1999).

Any thoughts?

I expect that many of their citizens will need our help getting their wealth out of their country, and will share it generously with us.

But first, they will need a copy of our passport to perform the background check for our honesty and also a once only, final amount of Two Thousand Five Hundred United States Dollars ($2,500 USD) to obtain Anti-Terrorist and Anti-Money Launtry Certificate from the International Anti-Money-Laundry Office of the United Nations.

When the former military dictator is your best option for your country, you’re probably not in a great position.

But now you won’t if it’s the real Prince or not.

In Nigeria, every man is a Prince. Any who are Princesses are put to death.

Oh, wow, if you quote tag a hotlink, the entire quote area is a link. I did not know that.

Oh, and, yeah… “Hmm, this guy took over the country and ran it with an iron fist… We could use a little iron fist right about now…”

I suspect that Nigeria’s well being is going to depend much more on commodity prices than on the person in charge. Oil prices are low right now, which doesn’t look good for Nigeria. Hopefully I’m wrong.

What’s Buhari’s stance on the Shariah law question?
