Change in software, re: person on Ignore?

Up to now, when someone quoted a person I have on Ignore, the quote box was always blank to me, and it did not show any of the quoted post. It showed the quoted poster’s screen name, and then blank space.

Except that a few times lately, I’ve noticed that some quoted posts (from an Ignored poster) do show in the quote box, and I am wondering if this is a change. It now appears that if the quoting poster highlights and quotes part of the Ignored poster’s post, that part will show in the quote box, but if they quote the entire post nothing will show up. (I know this sounds confusing, I’ve done the best I can to state it clearly.)

Perhaps this is connected to the deletion, and then return in a different place, of the “quote entire post” tool. I liked it better the old way, where nothing from an Ignored poster ever showed up. This seems like a dilution of the Ignore function. It is not, of course, the end of the world.

I get what you’re saying, and I’m seeing the same thing. It’s been surprising and a little unsettling.

(But it’s also part and parcel with the mindset of the core Discourse designers. If you remember, they didn’t even want to include an ignore function at all, and when it was introduced it had a strict time limitation, with no option to “ignore forever.” It makes sense that they’d want to “dilute” it.)

I’m seeing this behavior as well and it’s extremely disappointing. I put posters on ignore because I don’t want to see their posts. Just because a poster hasn’t been banned doesn’t mean their posts have any value to me. This change greatly diminishes the value of this board to me.

I haven’t paid much attention in the past to Discourse software changes. Have they been at all responsive to objections from users?

Hello! I work for Discourse and happened to notice this feedback while checking something else on straightdope.

I’ve done a little investigation and could reproduce the issue myself. I think this was an unintentional regression in our code that was fixed yesterday. I’ve just updated this site to our latest, and it appears the issue is fixed.

Sorry about the lapse here, an issue with the ignore feature can definitely be more upsetting than most. We’ve added some additional testing around quotes that will hopefully prevent something like this happening again.

If you encounter any more quotes from ignored users that are still showing content, feel free to send me a PM here with a link to the problematic post. You’re also welcome to post about wider Discourse issues on our support site directly, meta.discourse.org

Thank you!

Thank you. I’m indifferent to most changes but the ignore feature is an important one.

Thank you very much.

Wow, ok, nearly instant customer service. Thank you, I appreciate it.

Thanks, both for the fix and for stopping by to check out the Dope! Hope you stick around

Cool! Thanks a lot.

Yes, once you’ve been here for 20 years, you get automatically moved up to the Elite Concierge level of care. Looks like you’ve just achieved that milestone. Congratulations!

Holy cow, I let my anniversary go by last Saturday without notice.

I’m afraid I have a quibble with the recent fix for posts or parts of posts quoted from someone who is on ignore, that was done by @wavyknife

Once in a while, someone responds to such a person (who is on ignore), and the response makes me want to read the post to which they are responding. There used to be an upward arrow in the quote box that would take me to the post that was being quoted, and if I wanted to, I could read it. Now it appears that upward arrow is not there, but only for posters whom I have on ignore. Could that arrow be brought back?

This is a much more minor issue than the problem that was so expeditiously fixed, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I think that what was “expeditiously fixed” was them installing their already existing already repaired latest version of their scripts onto our instance of Discourse that was not yet scheduled to get the latest.

Still it’s darn good to get it fixed. I have nothing but praise for it being done promptly.

But it’s not like they dropped everything to code up a repair from our reports.

Seems reasonably possible, I can look into it

True! it was a case of convenient timing. Though I was quick to press the update button

So long as you’re reading, I’m noticing a text justification weirdness in quoted text. The top line appears to be centered rather than right-justified. This means the poster’s avatar and name are centered on a line by themselves above their text.

It’s disconcerting, but not that big a deal. Just thought I’d mention it.

It’s back!

Thanks for including the theme and OS details, looks like Vincent needs some maintenance
