I understand the ignore list works for people that, well. . . want to ignore others. But if a third party quotes an ignored person, does the ignoree see the quote of the ignored?
For example: V: “You part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor! Meet me at High Noon on the Quarterdeck for a lightsaber duel.” L: --Has ‘V’ on her ignore list– A: <quote>“Meet me at High Noon”</quote> “Princess, don’t go; it’s a traaaaaap!”
Would “L” see “V’s” dire invitation through “A’s” post, or is it hidden due to the ignore list?
Tripler
Names (and episodes) changed to protect the innocent.
Yes, L would not see V’s original post, but L would see the quote of V’s post.
We get complaints about this from time to time, but that’s the way vBulletin works and there’s no setting in it to make quoted text conform to ignore lists.
Some people have taken advantage of this and have intentionally quoted someone that they know is on someone else’s ignore list just to make sure they’ll read the ignored post. Doing this intentionally is jerkish behavior and you can be moderated for it.
Why not test it out yourself? Why are people so hesitant to just put someone on ignore, see if they can see a quote from them on a 3rd member’s post, and then unignore them? It’s not going to break the board, it’s not going to send a PM to the person that you’ve put them on ignore for 18 seconds, it’s not going to do anything. Just test it out.
Stuck where? Stuck on ignore? It’s just as easy to take them off as it is to put them on. And if they have a problem, they can just PM a mod. It’s not like we’re working with codes to the missile launch here.
You can’t. And I didn’t suggest ignoring yourself, I suggested ignoring someone else. Just pick a name at random who’s been quoted somewhere, and see what happens. You’re not going to break anything, and it’s easily reversed.
There’s no assurance that putting somebody on ignore has the same effect on their prior posts and quotes thereof as it will on future posts and quotes thereof. Your method can totally test the former. It’s not testing the latter case.
We can *guess *that vBulletin is simplistic enough that your current ignore list is used to filter the current page rendering. Just like your current sig and location and status are displayed when you view a post from years ago when all those values were different then. We can certainly believe that it’s highly likely it’s that way. But we can’t *know *it’s that way.
This statement surprises me, because earlier this year, I was subjected to this, with the repeater being a moderator, and one who explicitly said something like, “I don’t know if Bricker has you on ignore, but he can’t have me on ignore, so I’ll quote you to be sure he’ll see it.”
I reported this, although it’s possible that the report attempt failed because Tapatalk sometimes doesn’t send reports (it forces you to sign in, then claims you have to wait because you just reported something, and then forces you to sign in again, ad nauseum). In any event, it wasn’t the end of the world and I let the matter drop.
So just to confirm for any future events: while of course a routine conversation may involve a moderator participating and quoting, the deliberate and explicitly admitted act of a moderator using his “I Cannot Be Ignored,” status and quoting Poster X to ensure that Poster Y (who has ignored that rat bastard X) sees X’s words is jerkish?
As far as I am aware, this usually happens in the Pit, since it’s allowed there, and therefore wouldn’t be moderated. I’m also sure there are cases where other mods have allowed it for one reason or another. We don’t moderate every single rule violation, as that would end up being rather draconian. It depends on how major or minor the moderator felt the infraction was.
As always, if you have a question about why something was reported but not moderated, feel free to send a PM to the moderators of that forum. Alternately, you can report the post again and ask in your post report for someone to provide feedback on the issue.
Bricker, if you are referring to what I think you are referring to, the incident occurred in the Pit somewhere around last July. Your post report was received, and prompted a discussion in the mod loop. Since mod loop discussions are private I will not repeat what was said, but I do believe that the situation was handled appropriately. If you are referring to something else, feel free to send me a PM and I will check into it for you.
