Changing Careers

So I’m an Intern in the School system right now. I love working with kids, though I hate administration and being a parent to the really bratty/bad kids. I also hate being an intern (I’m far away from home and not getting paid, plus I have everyone looking over my shoulder) I also hate the long hours. I taught today till 3:30, and then had aftershool band reherearsal till 5, and now I must correct assignments and prepare for tomorrows lessons.

Arrgh! I need a break.

But for real, I think I’m going to try and go for it in music as a musician/private teacher/ composer and arranger. I still get to work with kids, and I love performing. The pay might be lower, but then again if I work hard it might not. I’m 22 so i’m still young. What do you think? Yea or nay? I know I have to see if being a musician is my true calling. I’m wondering how have others fared when switching careers after University/college. I am fortunate that I have no debts right now so really I still have a blank slate.

If you love performing, creating and being with kids, then I’d suggest you looking into a local performing theatre troupe. Many of them tend to be non-profit (okay, there’s my non-profit plug), and are usually looking for new blood. Yeah, the pay stinks, but if they’re truly non-profit, and you have a background teaching, then you could potentially increase your revenue through grants and corporate sponsorship.

Places to begin–local community college, local artists, small theatres, public school system, local foundations, local newspapers (which will give you a good heads-up as to what is already available in your area).
