Characters you hate on shows you like

Recently I’ve been catching up on some back episodes of Bones, and watching it from the early seasons on I’ve decided I really hate the Angela character.

First of all, her job is completely bullshit. Okay, maybe not completely, she does utilize some real-life techniques, however no one in real life can recreate a face from just a skull with the 100% accuracy that Angela achieves. Then of course there’s the straight-up bullshit like the “zoom and enhance”-type stuff that is standard for this type of show.

But I can look past all that stuff. What I hate about her is the shallowness. She’s not the standard Valley-girl, dumb-bimbo type of shallow, that I could accept, but she is rather the more insidious type of shallow, the kind that thinks she’s all thoughtful and deep, but is really quite silly and trifling. For example, the first time that Hodgins proposes, she declines because even though she loves him, it just doesn’t “feel” right. Seriously, bitch? She’s supposed to be this deep-thinking free spirit, but she’s really just a shallow, self-absorbed cunt.

What are characters you hate (who you’re not supposed to dislike, i.e. villians) on shows you otherwise enjoy?

LInda Belcher on Bobs Burgers. First of all her voice is annoying as hell (yes, I know it’s actually voiced by a man), next her personality is that of the stereotype of a meddling Jewish or Italian mother or grandmother. She’s just irritating.

Even Bob must not like her as there is no chemistry between them.

Oops, other than your last line, I would have mentioned Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances, but you’re not really supposed to like her. But she goes beyond dislike to me, into grating annoyance.

But I like every other character in the show. I’d watch a spinoff show about Onslow and Daisy.

Deanna on ST:TNG. Officer Useless, as I used to call her. I hated her accent. She added nothing to the show. Her only contribution to the ship was stating the bloody obvious.

Her mother was 10 times as annoying, but I think she was supposed to be.

I LOVE Linda Belcher. I love her songs, and her quotes. “She can sit in syrup! Let the Bees get her.” Bob does love her. He’s just not a very demonstrative man.

Like the Walking Dead, hated Lori. Glad she’s dead/gone/eaten.

I can’t count the number of times that I have wanted to shake Cheyanne on Reba’s first show.

God bless you and Reba always!!!

Holly

Can’t think of any really good examples (one soso example) on on-going shows, but a couple on shows that are over but that I liked enough to watch all of.

Taub and Thirteen on House annoyed me and I disliked them. They were disappointing compared to the original characters, who were all very interesting.

Josh on West Wing was really dislikable by the end of the show. But he did not seem to be meant to be so.

Rigby from the Mentalist is a bit irritating and I don’t care for him particularly. And that show is still on.

I completely disagree about Angela on Bones being shallow. If she were shallow, she wouldn’t be friends with the main character. She’s just way on the F side - her feelings are what she relies on, not her thoughts. So to her, that it feels wrong is an important reason not to do something. Maybe I’m excusing her too much because I do like her a lot, though. I like every meant-to-be-likable character I’ve seen on Bones, and some of the not meant to be likable ones

I couldn’t stand Billy on Six Feet Under. Hated him so badly that I stopped watching the show.

Later picked it up again and made it through the Billy parts. Glad I did as it was excellent (if more than a bit angsty.)

"however no one in real life can recreate a face from just a skull with the 100% accuracy "

Based on what I’ve seen, this is not an uncommon claim. I too doubt how accurate these reconstructions can be, but their accuracy seems to be well-accepted in popular culture.

Skyler in Breaking Bad.

Yeah, OK, so her husband deals crank, and her whole extended family is in mortal danger because of that. . . I still hate her and wish she would just stop whining and get off Walt’s back. It’s totally irrational. And I guess I love it.

Love NCIS, hate Abby Sciuto.

Love Torchwood, hate Gwen Cooper.

Jane on Coupling.

Well, however it is you’d describe the way Angela is, I still hate her.

Curtis Armstrong-Moonlighting

Hasn’t been seen lately but: Strauss on Criminal Minds. I understand her function, just has zero tact.

Watching King of the Nerds, I don’t think of his RotN character, but his Moonlighting character.

Herbert on Family Guy. He has one joke and they’ve been stretching it out for over ten years now.

I absolutely hate Family Guy and everyone on it, except for when Stewie and Brian get together all by themselves. Then it is hilarious.

I didn’t Love Battlestar Galactica the way a lot of people did, but I think it’s fair to say that I watched it avidly, and I hated HATED HATED Gaius Baltar.

I liked King of the Hill and I like Tom Petty, but I hated the Lucky character that he voiced.
