Sometimes the casting in TV shows leave much to be desired and some characters just don’t seem to click. Here’s a few of mine:
“MAS*H” - Hot Lips - Just never liked her. Klinger - one-joke pony
“Cheers” - Rebecca - not really sure why I didn’t like her, I just didn’t
“Star Trek - TOS” - Chekhov - a marketing ploy and generally boring character
“Star Trek - TNG” - Well, duh, Wesley for all the obvious reasons. AND Counselor Troi - “I sense bad acting, Captain”
“Night Court” - Billie - was replaced by Markie Post with good reason, she was unappealing (and not just in a physical way); Harry - a little too positive and upbeat (I know that was the point, but still…)
I used to like Buffy, but over the past few seasons she’s become my least favorite character. Willow, Xander, Anya and Spike and much more fun to watch.
I agree with your assessment of Troi and Wesley on TNG, but I have to add Q. I cringed every time he showed up, and often changed the channel because I knew it would be a crappy episode. Three characters I really hated, but I still liked the show.
Exodor on “Mork and Mindy” Beau on “Welcome Back, Kotter” Dr. Smith on “Lost in Space” (why didn’t somebody…anybody, just kill this bastard? Seems to me like that hotheaded Major West could’ve just “zzzzzz” him with with a raygun or something…)
Niles on Frasier: Before this whole Niles and Daphne thing, he was OK but now the whole Niles and Daphne thing is like going to high school and standing in a crowded hallway watching all the other boyfriend and girlfriends. “Snookums?” I don’t hate Niles, but he is really getting on my nerves. His getting together with Daphne was always something the fans wished for b/c Niles was always in torment. But now that it’s happend, it’s really annoying.
Talia Winters on Babylon 5. I know she’s important to the plot. I know she’s Jerry Dolyes wife. She has unbelivable cheekbones and may or may not have smooched Claudia Christian. But ye gods, she is the worst piece of -verybadword- actress I’ve EVER seen. And I was involved in HS theater. Well, to be fair, one or two one-shot characters were played by even worse actors. But only one or two. And yeah, Byron was worse, but he was only around for a few episodes.
Hiro Yuei, Trowa Bardon, and Wu Fei on Gundam Wing. Dosn’t matter which one, they’re basically interchangeable, and only one of them had signifigant impact on the plot. Smart move. Give the characters with no personality 80% of the screen time. Though, to be fair, all three justify thier existance in the movie. But just barely.
Joey on “Friends” - he’s the standard sitcom dumb-guy character; there’s no way any moderately intelligent people would continue to hang out with somebody this stupid. In fact, there’s no way anyone could BE this stupid and get through life outside a nursing home. Totally implausible. The same goes for Phoebe, to a lesser degree.
Also, I never really liked Elaine on “Seinfeld” - kinda boring. In fact, I didn’t care much for Jerry, either - too smug. And towards the end, Kramer’s antics grew tiresome. George really held that show together.
On “The Simpsons”, both Marge and Lisa can be annoying, and I hate Krusty the Clown and Dr. Hibbert. That’s all I can think of for now - I’m sure I’ll come up with more.
All the Lisa or Marge based episodes are really not as good (except for the Dustin Hoffman as the substitute teacher).
I don’t think I watch enough TV to add anything else to this thread. . .
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine–Captain Sisko. Can’t stand him. Never could stand him. Cheered when Dukat beat him up in the sixth season. He was an important character, and the show needed him, but that smug self-righteousness just grated.
I love Marge. I feel sorry for her too, being married to Homer and all. But yeah, I hate Krusty the Clown. I also hate Mr. Burns and Police Cheif Wiggum.
Amen. Niles actually was almost my favorite but I fear the writers just drove a stake through the heart of my favorite comedy by putting those two together. They should have left good and well enough alone.
People will no doubt want to crucify me for this, but…
I think Homer Simpson has become annoying in the last few years. For a long while he was a likeable doofus, a three-dimensional character (even more than a majority of the “real” people on t.v.) and was easy to identify with. In the early episodes of the series, he was a not-too-bright fellow, who nevertheless was in love with Marge and struggling to be a good father, and his feelings of ineptitude were not only funny, but also genuinely moving. But in the recent past he has just been written broader and broader until he’s lost any sympathetic traits, he’s just a complete jackass and not nearly as funny any more.
