There seem to be a lot of these threads about Charlie Kirk and his murder. Do we think that maybe there should be an omnibus thread or at least cleaned up into 2 or 3 threads? There’s a lot of overlap in them.
Not to mention posting exactly the same thing in multiple threads.
Problem: there are too many Charlie Kirk threads.
Solution: create a thread to discuss the overabundance of Charlie Kirk threads.
I propose we create a new forum category, The Kirk Zone, the same way we created The Quarantine Zone during COVID.
Despite the flippant responses I’m going to suggest this pattern will be repeated every time there’s a new news-catchy outrage.
Which will occur more and more frequently as the descent into violent Fascism continues.
The mods may not need to fuss with the hydra-headed monster of Kirk-related threads. But IMO they could usefully open a private discussion about a policy for these kinds of shotgun 20-thread firestorms.
There was a discussion already, not much will be done. At some point some of the threads might be consolidated or they might not.
In other words yes, no, maybe.
ISTM a feature of the board is also a problem (sometimes).
Want a thread focused on the political ramifications of Kirk, P&E. Want a thread on how his death will affect the US? GD. Want to say you hate/love the guy, Pit.
Each is meant to focus discussion (except maybe Pit). So, you end up with many threads on the same topic but each is meant to restrict what is being discussed.
I don’t think that is a bad thing.
So I’m not seeing too many active Kirk threads, maybe I missed a few?

This is well said, and basically what we discussed in the mod loop when this situation got underway. Otherwise, you end up with a bunch of people discussing various aspects of the event and having discordant conversations.
Neither did we.
I don’t mind the multiple threads on Kirk. Actually, I like them because they’re focusing on different aspects of the story, and it allows a reader to pick and choose which threads to follow. An omnibus thread that generates hundreds of posts an hour about anything Kirk-related is a chore to keep up with.
What bothered me was when it seemed that other threads were being dominated by Kirk discussion; particularly the Omnibus Stupid MFer thread in the Pit, where the discussion really had nothing to do with the thread anyway. But that mostly stopped, and the discussion is pretty much solely in the dedicated threads.
These threads aren’t a problem, they’re an example of the board working properly.
What makes you think that? I think Trump and friends will do something new and awful next week and we’ll never hear about Kirk again.

I kinda disagree, but not strongly. Not terribly interested in this guy or his death, so spending little time in any of the threads. And it has long been established that my preferences as to splitting vs lumping are out of step with the mods and many posters.
I’d prefer at most 3 threads: maybe one for polite discussion in P&E or IMHO; another in the Pit for less polite discussion. And maybe a strict “breaking news” thread in MPSIMS. But folk whose opinions matter more than mine prefer the splitting of threads across multiple forums.
When they overly split discussions in the manner this one has split, the result is to make me less interested in any of them.
How about a “Charlie Kirk” tag in addition to the current “trump” tag being applied to Kirk discussions?
I don’t see a problem with that and they’re easy to create. But I will leave it up to our tag wizard, @What_Exit, to add it if he wishes.
I get this is your preference (which is fine) but I think it is too restrictive.
E.G. We have some LGBTQ posters on this board. Maybe they want to discuss Kirk’s views on LGBTQ people. That would probably be a thread on its own and not neatly fit in your three thread paradigm.
I’m not a fan of short term tags. This will be down to one thread within a month tops.
