It’s a joke. If it were real I’d say go for it, but it’s just another guy being a jerk on Fox. (And Fox is covering itself in the process - there’s a stunner.) And come to think of it isn’t that area sacred ground? How can they build a gay bar on that?
As supportive as I am about some Muslims building a cultural center near ground zero, I have to admit this is an interesting thought experiment.
Perhaps the way to handle it is similar to how highway commissions have handled it when the KKK have wanted to ‘tend’ stretches of highway - “This piece of highway is maintained by the Ku Klux Klan” - rename the piece of road to Martin Luther King Memorial Highway.
If the street they want to build the cultural center on was renamed 'Honorary Golda Meir Avenue," would they still want to build it?
There’s already a Golda Meir Square further uptown. The author of the page points out that there are usually halal cart vendors nearby. In any case, if the group behind the 51Park building is the tolerant kind of organization they say they are, I don’t see why they would care.
The answer is the same: if they don’t like having it next door, tough. The Muslims have the same right to build their cultural center as the guy does to build his gay bar.
Probably they would. The people involved with the mosque are committed to multcultural understanding.
