As per this
thread, I will be in Chicago from the 20th-23rd of this month. Towards the end of the thread it became clear that fessie and I will be having dinner on Friday night, at Carmens, in Evanston, a hop skip and jump from Wilmette. She’s picking me up at my hotel about 7PM, then on to the Temple, and then dinner. I expect to be at Carmens by about 9PM. A little late for dinner, I know, but it’s the earliest that fessie’s schedule will allow.
I’d love to meet more of the Chicago Doper contingent while I’m in town, so who else wants to join us for what is, presumably, some of the best pizza in Evanston? If anyone’s interested, we might try to find someplace to go afterwards, as I understand that Carmens closes at 11PM.
[whine]Evanston? What’s wrong with Chicago?[/whine]
Seriously, sounds fun. I’ll try to make it, but Fridays are iffy for me, because I have to be at work early and am often a wreck by the time other people are out having fun. Count me in as a probable.
Kyla, as far as I know, there’s nothing wrong with Chicago! (Never actually been there, though). I mentioned in the linked thread that Friday is the evening that I can go to Wilmette to see the Baha’i Temple, and someone else mentioned that Evanston is right next to Wilmette, and Carmens has great pizza. So I checked it with fessie (my chauffeur to the Temple), and she said sounds good to her. We decided it would be better to have dinner closer to Wilmette, anyway, since it would be so late.
Hope to see you at dinner!
Reservations (if Carmens takes them) will be under Cecil Adams.
MikeG, I’ll be happy to meet you! I’ve been lucky enough to meet many of the MADs (Mid Atlantic Dopers), and am excited to meet some Chicago-style ones, too!
Man, I’m jealous now. I wish I could go. Oh well, the wife and I decided it’s time to do another Lou Malnati’s “Tastes of Chicago” delivery to Maine. Anyway, I just wanted to nitpick a slight error in your post:
I believe you misspelled “the world”.
I hope you guys have a blast. Have a slice and a beer for me.
Well, I haven’t had much pizza in other areas of “the world”, but I don’t doubt that it’s miles better than anything that can be obtained in Cumberland, MD.
It’s a couple of blocks from the El, and therefore no more difficult to get to than most decent pizza places in Chicago. I’m not sure about my schedule yet, but if I end up going I’ll give you a ride.
Ahhh, Carmen’s, the pizza of my misspent youth…
Eva Luna, Evanston Township High School Class of 1986
As might be evident from my Location, I cannot attend. But I grew up in Evanston and have been to Carmen’s more times than I can count (popular kid’s-birthday restaurant). I don’t know if it is still this way, as I haven’t been since I left for college five years ago, but I recall that the pizza is very good but the service takes a long time (have a snack before you go, maybe). Have fun, Evanston’s a great town, with lots of good eats, in fact.
No kidding. While I only attended for a year, I was at ETHS in 86. I was a Soph at the time. Nice school. Much better than Sullivan HS, in Rogers Park. What an exciting school that was.
Well, since the conference I’ll be at that weekend serves lunch at noon on Friday, and it’ll be 9ish when we arrive at Carmen’s, I’d say a snack is definitely in order! But I’ll have a couple of hours between the end of the conference for the day, and the time fessie picks me up at my hotel, so I’ll have plenty of time to grap a hot dog or something.
When I was there, it would take a good 45 minutes for a large stuffed pizza. If you don’t want to wait that long, call ahead about 20-30 minutes with your order if you know what you want. They do (did) have soups, salads and garlic bread for the wait.
Since it’s only a week til my marvelous pizza dinner in Evanston, I thought I’d give this thread a little bumpity-bump in case anyone who’s interested missed it.
What a coincidence! I went to Sullivan my freshman and sophomore year, then transferred to ETHS in '87. Trying to remember names, only Mrs. Podrovsky the music teacher and Coach Pols ( or was it Pels?) who I saw slam a gang banger headfirst into a locker, good times, good times.
Oh and as for Friday, I will have three kids with me that night and I don’t think that would be conducive to a fun mini dopefest. My ex needed to change weekends at the last minute.
Heh - small world, eh? I think we’d have the “6 degrees of Straight Dope” in 2, maybe even 1.
What I remember most about Sullivan was hanging out at the Triad (sp?) pitching quarters, the history teacher who’d give you a “C” just for showing up and the bizarre policy of a machine calling your house at 5pm with a recorded truancy message if you missed homeroom. Ahh - the memories of misspent youth…
