As previously discussed in this thread (unfortunately named ChiDope 2017, so I didn’t resurrect it), several of the Chicago Dopers have discussed meeting up the afternoon of Saturday, Jan 13th at D’Agostino’s* in Wrigleyville. All are welcome! Who wants to brave the cold to meet us lovely people**?
*Pizza is the worst, I don’t know why you people eat it. If anyone wants to move the venue to Chiya Chai, I’m down for that. But Wrigleyville is probably easier for the suburban contingent to get to, and I can eat the hell out of some chicken wings while you people eat that disgusting pizza stuff.
I may try to make it and for the suburban boy Chiya Chai would be MUCH preferred and easier to get to. (Some of us come from points west.) And it looks like it just a couple of blocks from Blue line stop for the public transportation folk.
Well, I think that’s a bit broad as a general statement, and I’m a little surprised that you’re holding a grudge against a different group of people from nearly a decade ago.
However, if we decide to go to Chiya Chai, you order and pay at the counter, and they bring you your food and drinks at the table, so the separate checks issue is automatically resolved.
ETA: I don’t look like anyone that I know of, but I’m the aging goth with her purple hair in a bun and funky eyebrows.
A table full of Dopers left the person who organized the meet-up holding the bag for a $200 shortfall. This is not one or two people who shorted, this was quite a few. It soured me on any more real-life meetings with other members of the Dope. I’ve had plenty of other real-life meetings with people I’ve “met” on-line, and none of them behaved like that.
While I agree that was a shitty thing to do, I think that the fact that you decide to come in and poison the well for a future meetup of different individuals is obsessive and weird. Particularly when the group seems to be leaning towards a pay-as-you-go venue where this won’t even be an issue.
I donated $80 towards the shortfall to help out the person left holding the bag. If I can let people know not to depend on their “fellow Dopers”, I’ll do so. I earned it.
I’ve been to Dopefests and met Dopers in Detroit, Florida, New York City, and Philadelphia. I’ve probably met about fifty of us. Some have become my closest friends. Never has anything like that happened to me.
People are individuals. To hold an entire message board responsible for the actions of a dozen is absurd.
Also, when I said the notice was too short for this fest, what I meant is I wasn’t paying attention until yesterday. What I meant is I’ll try to pay better attention in the future. I want to meet you!
1 in the afternoon, eh? It’s possible that I could make it. You sure you don’t want to have it somewhere in the south suburbs?
P.S. This Chia place, do they have beer?
They have a smallish beer menu (I remember maybe 6 or so beers?) and a number of chai-based cocktails, as well as the extensive non-alcoholic chai menu.
This Chai joint sounds about as hipster as it gets. I don’t think I can grow a neck-beard that fast. I vote we stick with the original plan for D’Ag’s.
I’m in.
I do prefer a Wrigleyville pizza, bar or tavern atmosphere to a Logan artsy chai spot (well, it is!) for this sort of thing but will go with the flow. I can perhaps overlook, in time, what was said about pizza but you know the wings are far superior at Dags, too.
Experience predicts an extraordinary number of day-of ‘family emergencies’ and ‘uncharacteristic forgetfulness’ for these events. Better to show up unexpected than to rsvp weeks advance, only to flake out last minute, totally not my fault, lol.
