Both are carryout only. Unfortunately, they are pretty far from downtown in areas of the city that apparently did not vote for Daley so much Twin Anchors ribs are of the “meat Jello” variety, i.e. steamed meat till it is falling off the bone, sweet sweeet sauce and no smokiness to them aside from the chemical tang of LiquidSmoke. Some people swear by them, I would pass.
The only reason I even suggested those is because travelers don’t always feel like adventure eating and sometimes the security of a known quantity is a good thing.
Personally, I find the little hole-in-the-wall eateries the best. But that really can be adventuresome eating.
Okay, it seems like I’ll have plenty of great eating places to choose from! Any Chicago area dopers wanna join me someplace for a beer on Wednesday, April 20th, in the evening? Wednesday and Friday will be my free evenings during the conference, and on Friday evening, I’m going to Wilmette to see the Baha’i Temple.
Hit “Navy Pier” and eat at “The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company” just to say that you did it. The foods decent and well within your price range. Best to go there are a warm summers day and sit out side like a tourest, which of course you will be . . .
You must go to The Underground Wonder Bar at 10 east Walton St. 2 ½ blocks away. Live music 356 nights a year. Lonie Walker is the owner and plays most Fridays and Saturdays after 11PM. http://www.undergroundwonderbar.com/ . Trust me on this.
You know, Lou Malnati’s will deliver to you - in Florida. When the wife and I get real homesick for the food, we have it delivered to us in Maine. You can get the “Taste of Chicago” pack which includes the pizza, Eli’s cheesecake, Chi style dogs and Carson’s ribs. It aint cheap, but it’s worth every penny. http://www.tastesofchicago.com/
Also, I’ll second the recommendation to eat at the Billy Goat Tavern. It doesn’t get anymore Chicago than that. If you do go, say hi to Slats Grobnik for me.
FWIW, my sister, bless her heart, sent my some Lou Malnati’s pizza when I moved to San Jose 10+ years ago. It came frozen, and didn’t travel well; reheated it was well-neigh inedible. Sigh. It is the thought that counts. Perhaps Lou has improved things since then.
I should mention as a tribute, that my sister also couriered to me some authentic bratwerst from a Chicago butcher, packed in dry ice, shipped same-day via the airlines. We had a marvelous barbeque that day. Thanks, Sis!
Actually, one of my best friends, Illinois Doper Selkie, once surprised me by sending me dry ice-packed Lou Malnati’s pizzas in Florida! Damn they were good. We have Pizzeria Uno’s restaurants here in Orlando, but even reheated Lou’s is better than the more famous Chicago-style Uno’s.
You might want to give this a bump closer to the date - most of us can’t plan our Wednesday evenings that far in advance. You’re going to love the Baha’i Temple, though; the gardens should be blooming a bit by then, and they’re fabulous. It’s one of my favorite bike rides in summer.
Agreed. We have Pizzeria Uno’s in Maine as well, and it’s “eh”. But we do have Chicago Dogs, and it’s authentic. We can get the Vienna Beef dogs, beef sandwiches, and even a Maxwell Street Polish for lunch. Good stuff.
I was really just putting out feelers to see if there was any interest in this. . .kind of a mini-dopefest. I’ll probably start a separate thread about a week beforehand, as some of the ChiDopers that might be interested in getting together, might not be reading this thread.
OK. Do not pass up the opportunity to treat yourself to the best stuffed pizza in Chicago: Carmens Pizza. It’s in Evanston on Church street, very close to where you’ll be in Wilmette. If you’re running a little short on meal money, mug someone. Knock over a liquor store, grift, anything it takes - it’s well worth it.
Well, maybe not 5-10 years in Joliet worth it, but damn close. Also, they’ll half bake and freeze pizzas if you want to take one home. Trust me on this, Carmens stuffed pizza should not be passed up.
Well, a Chicago Doper has graciously agreed to pick me up at my hotel Friday evening, and drive me to the Temple, and I was thinking we’d go eat after that. I will suggest this to her. Are they open late?
They’re open until 11pm on Fridays. When I worked there (15 years ago) they would stay open as long as business dictated - sometimes past midnight. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere, 2 story restaurant right in downtown Evanston.
If you do go, I would suggest the stuffed spinach pizza if you like spinach, otherwise everything is awesome. Be sure to get the stuffed, not the deep dish pan.
I love Carmens and would defintely be up for a visit there. Note that Carmens recently moved out of its’ two story space into a more modest sized storefront right next door to the old location.
Huh. I really liked the old one. Are they doing less business these days or what? I used to wait tables at the original Sherman street store, and tended bar at the Church street one. From Wednesdays to Saturdays both places would be packed every night. I made some pretty good money there. Do they have a bar at the new locale?
