In the coming months I will be moving to another state. I have a friend that I would like to come out and stay for weekend visits. However his driver’s license has been suspended because of child support.
His X no longer collects child support because the children are over 18. His check is attached so he will eventually pay off his debt + interest to society.
So, has anyone had a similar experience in California? Can one get their drivers license and vehicle registered as long as they continue to pay their dept. And not have children collecting child support?
He doesn’t want to find out because, well I don’t know why but I am curious. I think he just hates dealing with the bureaucracy.
I have no experience with child support, but plenty with DMV. If he has an agreed-upon plan for paying off his child support, a DMV investigator (or whatever they call them) can reverse or reduce the suspension – they have quite a lot of latitude.
Your friend should contact his local child support collection unit and ask them what the requirements are. Around here, he would have to agree to have a money judgment entered against him for whatever unsecured arrears are outstanding (which may have already happened, since he is paying interest) and sign off on a payment plan. I know that they are garnishing your friend’s salary, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he has signed an agreement to to repay.
