Childhood Commercials

Technically a PSA…but Time for Timer

Ha! Good one. In the same vein, there’s Yuck Mouth

“I’ve got roast beef in my teeth and some chicken too
Ouch that’s a cavity! Hey, that’s new!”

Mister Yuck is mean. Mister Yuck is green.

You’ve got an uncle in the furniture business- Joshua Doore- Joshua Doore!

Wow, what a description: “Joshua Doore was later found dead, mafia involvement was suspected.”

I always thought this Captain America PSA was pretty cool and wondered why they never made a Captain America cartoon like they did Spidey and his Amazing Friends.

The Crest Team was pretty cool too.

Looking at it now, those gals on the Crest Team are kind of sexy.

One of the first Pop Tarts commercials, circa 1964: Fruit vendor, pushing his cart through the streets of old New York and crying “STRAW-ber-RIES! BLUE-ber-RIES! CHE-e-e-e-e-er-RIES!”

The earliest computer commercial I remember.

I’m going to take the low road…a commercial that I don’t remember fondly.

It aired while I was living in California, around 1958 or 1959. It had a mechanical butler who served a tray of coffee. (The coffee was the product being advertised.) For some reason, that butler creeped me out. I used to have nightmares where he would be in my closet, bowing out with the tray of coffee with malevolent intent. It was like a TZ episode. The nightmares persisted for years. Can anyone remember a commercial like that? The only thing I recall is the butler gliding out like he was on wheels or on a track. Boy, it still gives me the shivers 60 years later.

588-2300 Empire! They’re no longer limited to the Chicago area and have since added an 800-prefix. I wonder why they didn’t get an 888-prefix instead.

It’s shaike ‘n’ baike an’ ah heylped.

Meow Mix commercials used to make my baby sister cry. It was a cat singing “Meow meow meow meow meow” ( repeat ). For years we went around singing that to her, making her cry. Charlie The Tuna ads were always funny. And then “Chicken of the Sea”.

“Riceroni the San Francisco treat”.
“Who wears short shorts, we wear short shorts”(nair)

I can’t believe I didn’t see this thread the first time around.

My favorite was a commercial for Odd Ogg. Link is to a video showing the toy, not the commercial.

Odd Ogg,
Half Turtle and Half Frog

I have a DVD set full of commercials from about 1950 - 1970, which has this one, and also Rockin’ Sockin’ Robots.
Great DVD set, especially for the cancer stick commercials with opera singers and sports stars.

Choosy Mothers choose Jif.

I distinctly remember the Baby Alive commercials. Particularly the Juice and Cookies Baby Alive.

In the studio:

“You know what the song needs? A superfluous key modulation at nine seconds.”

“Why?”

“Why NOT?!”

[sucks up gigantic rail of coke]

When I was little I wanted Good and Plenty.

when I was a bit older I wanted a Serta. Not really sure what it was but I really wanted one.

Ovaltine and Nesquik were for the unrefined children; I was a suave Bosco and Cocoa Marsh kid.

But, for subtle, sophisticated vintage advertising, it’s hard to beat Philadelphia’s Krass Bros. adverts.

I remember:
Morris (the finicky 9-lives cat)
Mr. Whipple
Madge the Manicurist
Ring around the collar
The San Francisco Treat
Sorry, Charlie
Ancient Chinese Secret
Stove Top, instead of potatoes
Good to the last drop
Folger’s Crystals
Plop, plop, fizz, fizz
How to spell relief
Era detergent being disturbingly proud of how well they clean bloodstains
The sensation of a York Peppermint Patty
Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t
Underoos
Cavity Creeps
What comes between Brooke Shields and her Calvins
