Trump isn’t a better man than XI, but being invaded and colonized makes it all much worse.
In China, children from non-atheist/non-Han families face bullying in school with no recourse. A world-traveling family member who knows Mandarin tells us he has overheard this (“You are a uyghur”) and it is heart-breaking. Trump is a bully himself, but his supporters, so far, show no interest in moving into my neighborhood.

This, I think, the most plausible answer which the majority of Americans would take. Including myself. I might not like it, but as long as I don’t rabble rouse, my life wouldn’t change much. The SDMB of course wouldn’t survive internet censorship.
Empires have been conquering people forever. The common folk just go about their lives.
If a viable armed resistance was gaining momentum, i might join. But I don’t have any delusions of patriotic heroism. I might hope for some sudden fall of the Soviet Union/Berlin Wall type event.

Yep. Even if they wanted to make life go on as usual for the populace in order to quell unrest, it would probably not be possible. I don’t recall a single instance in modern warfare, post, say, American Civil War, where a country has been successfully invaded and life just went on mostly as normal for the population. Someone would resist, even if it is not the U.S. government.
Which it would be. They might surrender but not without a fight. And even if not, there would still be resistance. Which means economic hardship and omnipresent repressive security.
Post WWII eastern Europe. Might not be technically an invasion, but clearly Soviet domination.
European Colonialism. Some lasted hundreds of years. Sure India gained independence from Britain, How long did that take. You are saying life didn’t go on as normal for a hundred years for the vast majority of the population? yes people resist and there are uprisings occasionally. But most people just went on with there lives
Look at a maps of the world spaced 100 years apart between from the beginning of time. Ottoman empire? Mughals? Roman Empire? China has grown and shrunk through the centuries.
It is just 3 years inside your deadline (1858 v 1861), but the British Empire ruled India from 1858 to 1947.
A couple important pros and cons not mentioned yet:
Pro: top notch infrastructure (high speed rail connecting major cities, subways within cities, immaculate freeways and AAA airport and railway terminals)

Absent a viable resistance, I’d probably keep my mouth shut and keep my family alive.
There is a certain tone to a lot of the posts that lead me to suspect, people aren’t answering directly to the OP because they think it is trick to get liberals to either welcome our Chinese Communist Party overlords or join with the NRA gun nuts, flag waving patriots.

Your hypothetical was doomed from the start. China is not going to occupy the contenental US. How do you think that is going to work? Landing craft on Pismo Beach? 12K transport planes full of PLA soldiers landing across the US simultaneously? Space lasers of any faith are not going to make that possible.
the United States of America exists in part because an oppressive, genocidal invader conquered a continent full of angry, freedom-loving “hell yeah I’d fight” warriors. Happens all the time. If by some whimsical feat of wizardry the United States and its entire military apparatus - remember, we have the two largest air forces in the world - were magically erased from the playing field, and millions of Chinese decided they’d rather schlep their tanks across thousands of miles of ocean to invade North America instead of their next door neighbors, then it’s a done deal, resistance or no resistance. Joe Bob’s Wal-Mart Freedom Warriors will have a fun three day campout, and then kindly Mrs. Johnson will narc 'em out to the local fuzz in exchange for not having her house burned down by a space laser or, as is more likely, three PLA goons with some gasoline and a zippo.
