Chris Isaak "Name that tune"

On Chris Isaak’s 1989 album “Heart Shaped World”, there is a song called “Blue Spanish Sky”. The last 4 notes, played by a trumpet, are very reminiscent of an older song, not by Chris Isaak. If you have the album, play the end of the song, and see if you can tell me what song that is.

Those last four notes remind me of an old Frank Sinatra song called “The Summer Wind.”

It’s E-B-C-A. I’m not sure what Sinatra’s “Summer Wind” sounds like, but it reminds me of a movie theme from the 60’s or 70’s. “Love Story”? “Summer of '42”? Something like that…

Aha! I knew it was something with summer. I think The Scrivener has got it: “Summer of '42.”

Listen to the melody here.

It took a few minutes to recall the movie better, but I’m pretty sure that’s the movie, with the theme by Michel Legrand. However, that doesn’t exclude the possibility that there was also a tune by Sinatra or someone else that Legrand could have built his theme around, by lifting a key melodic phrase or two… so it’s possible we’re both right.

I saw something like this from yesterday… TCM aired “Where Eagles Dare,” which has a very strident, brassy, gung-ho theme. A theme lifted in part by the Pythons for the “Sir Lancelot” theme in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Then again, that was satire.

Yep! Summer of '42… that’s the song! Thanks!
