Oh, it was THAT Piers Morgan. The poor man’s Simon Cowell.
To be fair, their political system is different and doesn’t abide fools in government. Our standards for good governance isn’t the media’s responsibility.
Watch Parliamentary debate one night on CSPAN, it’s crazy. The Prime Minister has to field questions as varied as terrorism, welfare and Aids research while getting heckled. He doesn’t have responses prepared, he doesn’t get to take a break to find out how best to spin his party’s position, he doesn’t get to storm off if he doesn’t like the question.
I find it odd American public schools focus more on speech skills than our Limey cousins yet we ask so much less from our politicians. Is it because we’re a larger more diverse nation leading to misunderstanding and problems translating inclusiveness? Or are we still having flashbacks from the Style-over-Substance battle of Kennedy and Nixon.
Has there been a silly ‘Flag Pin’ debacle lately in Britain? Gordon Brown’s ‘bigoted women’ was close, but that was a shitty thing to say and he deserved the heat for sounding insensitive.
I think you’re giving O’Donnell too much credit. She’s not some evil-genius, plotting a Howard Stern like media take over. She’s a career … um … something. What the hell does she do for a living anyway?
Now the guy who stood in front of the camera? Him. I’d bet he’s of Dr. No fiber.
You are talking, here, about and woman who took out a political ad to say I am not a witch," and killed her electoral chances. O’Donnell is not a brilliant manipulator of the media.
Are you saying that you are cool with the fact that the American system does abide fools in government?
Bur why not? Maybe the media, as the major center of power that they are, should take some responsibility.
Why, she runs for office every couple of years and lives off the campaign donations, doesn’t she?
Yup, she’s basically a very successful panhandler.
No, but to fix that the system needs to be changed. Require every Congressman to be present during speeches, limit their speaking time, allow cross, demand hard data and make it all available to the public.
I don’t recall media being mentioned in The Constitution. That they have the power to twist the message of our elected officials is not as relevant as the fact we seem to want that. It’s our collective fault we buy crap, don’t blame the crap salesman.
Well, there is that mention in the First Amendment of “the press.”
Now the story is that Pier’s questions about her opinions in her book were “creepy” and “boarderline sexual harrassment”. Riiiight.

I’d argue, actually, that it is - ‘freedom of the press’ isn’t enshrined in the Constitution so that various corporations have it easier making money.
America has a fine tradition of a muckraking press. Of course, now the muck they rake is celebrities instead of politicians.
