I’m currently listening to our local “easy-oldies” station, 96.9 KMMZ (Memories). They are playing Christmas songs. Beautiful songs to be sure, in fact they just played a rarely-heard goodie from the Vince Guaraldi Trio a la Peanuts. But, wouldn’t you say it’s a touch to early? Are there other people here or elsewhere with the same experience or sentiments?
I have not heard any songs on the radio yet…but - my town has already put up Christmas wreaths - with lights - on the light posts!!! They’ve been up for at least a week already.
We’ve got that here on our oldies station, too.
All holiday music, all the time, until Christmas. They did this last year, too.
What used to be “the Christmas season” now seems to have become “the Holiday season” in three phases – Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I personally prefer to get Thanksgiving behind me first. I usually wait until December 1 to put up any Christmas decorations.
My office mate is at this moment out buying a small Christmas tree to decorate our room with. It may be a little early, but we need cheering up (damn rain). Outside of a couple of TV commercials for Holiday CD’s, though, I haven’t heard any songs yet. Of course, I mostly listen to classical music on the radio
One yard in my neighborhood currently has
-12 different representations of Santa (defined as Santa heads, full body Santas, Santa in a sleigh)
-A 10 foot tall inflatable snowman
-Multiple strings of lights. But, not lovingly placed. More like they were violently disgorged from the stomach of some blind demon that cares only about offending sensible people with functioning brain cells.
-Multiple snowflakes taped all over the outside of the house
-6 reindeer. So, not only is this house obscenely early in decorating, they are also completely clueless as to how many reindeer belong
-A Hanukkah menorah!
-And, to top it all off, a headless Frankenstein monster in a lawn chair that has yet to be moved after the awful Halloween decorating job.
I can feel my home value sinking as we speak.
Now, I agree that Christmas season comes earlier and earlier this year. Santa made an appearance downtown on September 23 this year, the first day of fall.
But it’s November, LATE November. There are less than 35 days until Christmas. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to break out the carols.
Well, it struck me as weird, seeing as Thankgiving has yet to arrive; if there were some Thanksgiving songs, maybe…
I got my 2 Christmas trees on the 17th!!
The tree farm wasn’t even open yet, but the nice grandpa was there, and said we could go ahead and pick out our tree(s).
Settled on a 10 footer and a 7 footer. LOVELY trees!!!
Also got out all our Christmas decorations, and our Christmas CD’s! Makes the house happy and cheerful!
If my co-worker plays Mele Kalikimaka on her CD player one more time…
Well, I guess I’ll have to tell her to “lei” off.
A local station in central North Carolina started playing Christmas music all day Saturday a couple of weeks ago, while running a bunch of promos telling us what a great public service this was. Also, it’s a Clear Channel station, which means the playlist is approximately ten songs deep of the most over-played tunes of all time.
My policy is: wait until at least the afternoon of Thanksgiving to start the Christmas music. The day after anything goes.
Personally that means A Charlie Brown Christmas and a few rock and roll Christmas CDs.
I can’t decide to be sad because Thanksgiving has become reduced to the trivial “long shopping weekend between Halloween and Christmas” or glad because I don’t see turkeys and conucopias hanging in the mall in August.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas. I have a huge stack of Christmas music and I’m eager to get it playing 24/7. But dammit, it’s not Christmas season yet. I want to enjoy Thanksgiving first!!
If I ruled the world, no one would start thinking about Christmas until Advent started. And the lights go off, the tree comes down, and the music gets put away, the day after Epiphany.
Back in the early 60’s, when I was still in grade school, I received as a Christmas present a small Peanuts book titled Christmas Is. One of the cartoons showed Sally and Linus looking at a pile of discarded Halloween decorations outside a store, with the caption “Christmas is the decorations that go up the day after Halloween, and Thanksgiving isn’t even here yet!” So this phenomenom has been going on for a long time.
Already been listening to it in the wardrobe/changing areas at work for the past couple of weeks. Not 24/7 yet, but getting close there: at least right now it’s only every 10th song or so.
Worst rendition? Someone did a 20 minute home mix medley of upbeat, Latino-flavored Christmas carols (in English, (“O Come All Ye Faithful” etc.)
Interesting for the first few seconds, until it dawns on you that each tune alternates with the lyrics to “Macarena”, the song itself serving as the backbeat to the carols.
20 minutes of the “Macarena.” I’ve heard it twice in the last two weeks. It even plays in the bathrooms. Gotta say, no one dawdles in the locker area when that puppy rears its ugly head on the speaker system.
I nearly flipped on my DJ friend when last week, hanging at the bar with him, he proceeded to play a Christmas carol. (I can’t remember which one… one of the Elvis ones) He explained he promised to certain regulars that he would play one a night until Christmas. So I’m going to burn him a CD of Bob River’s Twisted Christmas Carols for him to play
I love every type of Christmas music.
I finally found the Phil Spector Christmas CD the other day at Boarders. Love it!
It’s just a month away folks. And with there’s only three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Where’s your spirit?
Thanksgiving is a bit later this year than usual, too.
On my commute to work, I pass two almost identical white houses side by side. Last Halloween they both had very large inflatable pumpkins on their porch roofs. As soon as the pumpkins came down, two identical Christmas wreaths went up. Neither house has ever take the wreath down. I waited all September, all October for the pumpkins to come back, but they never did. These people have had their Christmas decorations up since last November!!
Never mind the christmas songs…i’ve had my tree up for almost 3 weeks now! I guess since i live in canada and we have already done the thanksgiving thing, then i can use that as my excuse right!!!
