Christmas Songs?

I have this friend who’s a singer. She’s working on her Christmas program and is looking for ideas for a Christmas song. She doesn’t want to do a traditional carol, but religious is okay. She said last year she did a song by Amy Grant. The year before a song by Melissa Ethridge. Songs done traditionally by men are ok, too.

Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is the U2 Christmas song they play on the radio every year, and I can’t even come up with the title.

So, in that regard I suck as a friend, but maybe I can make up for it by having the SDMB in my back pocket?

Christmas in Dixie by Alabama.

By traditional, does she mean old, or does she mean one that is sung a lot?
e.g. Are “White Christmas” or “Santa Baby” traditional carols?
Is humorous OK? Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Lonely Pup (in a Christmas Shop)
Happy Xmas (War is Over)

I have a Christmas album with Mull of Kintyre (?!) on it, though it beats me how that can be considered a Christmas song.

Do you mean “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home?)”?

It’s a cover, by the way, of the song recorded by Darlene Love in 1963.

I like this version of ‘All I Want for Christmas’ so much that I have it on regular, non-Christmas mixes.

It’s a sad Christmas song, but I’ve always loved “River” by Joni Mitchell. The Sarah McLachlan cover is also lovely.

I think by traditional she means avoiding the standards like The Twelve Days of Christmas or Good King Wensceslaus, etc.

She would do an utterly fantastic version of Santa Baby.

Yes, that’s the one!

It was the Christmas number one for 1977 in the UK, that’s the only connection I can see.

Love the movie, love the song.

*Blue Christmas *by Elvis. Slays them every time. Gotta get the backup singers, though, they are integral.

kissin by the mistletoe by aretha franklin.

Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World”?

I love a lot of the songs on the album “Barenaked for the Holidays” by the Barenaked Ladies.

For a fun uptempo number, the Davis Sisters’ “Christmas Boogie.”

Or the Barenaked Ladies’ (with Sarah McLachlan) “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings” Medley.

Fairytale of New York?

You guys are so good.

Alison Krauss’ “Only You Can Bring Me Cheer” might be good.

Merry Christmas From the Family by Robert Earl Keen

I dislike most traditional Christmas songs but Charles Brown’s **Merry Christmas Baby **is one I can listen to any time of year.

My favourite Christmas song is Walkin’ Round in Women’s Underwear.
