Chrono Trigger DS: Translation lost its charm?

I avoided playing the Playstation re-release of Chrono Trigger, but I did watch the cut scenes. I assume the new DS version is using the translation from this version, or it’s a newer translation. Whatever. It’s different.

… Aaaa, I can’t stand it! It takes away so much of the charm from the game! Like when Crono walks into Guardia Castle and the soldiers say, “Whoa, check out that hair!” Now it’s all “hath forthwith sir foreswear” and it drives me nuts. It was charming that only Frog talked like that. I liked that some of the statements bordered on spoony bard silliness, too. It’s a bit like taking the fart jokes out of Earthbound to me.

They even renamed magic spells and items. That’s just wrong, 'cause it messes with my mojo. I got all 13 endings of the game and beat it enough times to have the most rocking awesome New Game+ save ever. I have a formula when it comes to beating this game, and they went and fiddled with my shit. :mad:

I’m still playing the ever-loving crap out of it because it’s awesome, but has anyone else had similar issues with the game? Or any re-releases like it? I know Final Fantasy games get re-released on twelve different systems on a bi-monthly basis. There have to be some differences there, too.

I heard they did that to Final Fantasy Tactics, too. For whatever reason they decided that everyone in Ivalice spoke Ye Olde Englishe. (While, in retrospect, it was odd that only Frog spoke this way in 600 A.D., it’s outright irritating that they decided to do that for the entire world at large.)

…say, more fridge logic…since this world goes by B.C./A.D., that means Jesus was born in the Chrono world, too?

600 A.D. is the worst with the ye olde Englishe, actually. 1000 A.D. is just very… proper. I realize they were trying to make the eras seem more authentic, and remove some of the translation’s errors (and there were many), but they really didn’t accomplish that. It was easier to suspend disbelief and think that everyone just sounded like broken English speaking Japanese people.
