Hi everyone, I have a question for those of you who have played both Final Fantasy Anthology and Chronicles. I have heard that they aren’t that great, but I would like to know why. I just bought Origins and am loving it! I understand the other two aren’t updated versions of the old games, but I would still like to go back and play the old classics. I’m quickly getting back into the FF series again. Anyway, aside from the long load times of Anthology and Chronicles, are there any other negatives? For instance, is the music different? Sounds? Anything like that would be extremely helpful for me!
No. Other than the load times the games are exactly the same as the original. And I think you also get Chrono Trigger, which is probably the single greatest RPG ever made.
Lets see:
FF4 - Awesome story, truly epic storytelling, end gae slows down.
FF5 - Great skill sysytem, the end game slows down.
FF6 - Best plot and most fun characters, end game slows down only a little.
Chrono Trigger - Absolute Blast to play. Fun, balanced game. No end game slowing. There are god-knows how many freaking endings, and there are several ways to beat the game.
The gameplay is unchanged (almost, see below). They have added new CGI intro sequences and some CGI cut scenes. (The CGI intro for FF6 is very well done, as is the CGI over the “closing credits” (IMHO))
Note that for FF4 they have included the “uncut” version of the game. This is not the same version originally released in the US, which had several sequences left out.
FF4, FF5, and FF6 are probably the best games in the series (and 6 is generally regarded as the best), although FF1, FF2, and FF3 are all really strong. Which ones does origins contain?
IMO, FF7, FF8, and FF9 were the weakest, although they’re certainly not bad. FF10 was good, but I need other PS2 entries to compare it to.
I have heard so much about chrono trigger, so I’m looking forward to playing that one as well. Thank you for the information!
Origins contained 1 & 2. Have you had problems with screen placement? Several screens are so far down and to the left that the adjuster can’t quite bring it to center screen. Pretty annoying and cheap. Do Anthology and Chronicles have the same problem?
Man, I am freakin’ envious that you have those. They are so expensive. Used ones seem to cost more then they did new! I wish they’d make more. It’s like they were limited editions. Sigh.
If you like Chrono Trigger, get Chrono Cross as well. It’s just as good gameplay, and better graphics (of course).
Are the Origins remakes?
I can’t say I’ve looked into them much.
I’m currently replaying 9, which is the only one I haven’t.
I liked 5 and 6, but got blahhed out by them as they
seemed so very slow to play. But in playing 6 I did finally
understand why fans of 6 seem to hate 7. The plots are kind
of similar.
5 was cool to compare to FFT for the job system. Which is kind-of
making a comback in FF X-2 in the dress sphere system.
FF3 had the job system first, although it was a bit different from the one in FF5.
Origins isn’t remakes. You can actually adjust how much like the original you want to play. You can turn on the sprint or enable certain health items in battle.
Square has an “Enhancements” section for Origins, Anthology and for Chronicles which describes the changes in each one.
