(Unless he hacked in and added his name next to manhattan’s in GQ. ) When did this happen?
I guess that makes him my fourth favorite moderator, behind only heavy water, water, and graphite. (There have been times I wanted to stick him in a nuclear pile, I must admit).
Well, he deserves it. (I meant that nicely! :D) I can’t think of anyone here more willing to share his extensive knowledge with even the least clued of the newbies. I think it fitting that he be moderator of GQ, finally giving good old Manny a hand. I hope he has fun.
Who richly deserves the honor–I predicted that he would soon be moderator (possibly the very next one named) to someone I correspond with via private e-mail.
So how’d that come about? I never heard any discussion about it.
Then again, I never heard about any discussion on becoming a moderator.
How exactly does that happen? Do you single someone out and say, “Hey you! Over there! Get in here! You’re a moderator now. Here’s your keys, get to work.”
Melin is a lawyer. Melin was a mod. Melin got in a BIG on-the-board argument with another mod. Stuff happened behind the scenes. Melin was demodded. Controversy ensued.
Later, Melin was offended by an admin’s statement on the Board. Melin threatened to sue. Melin was banned. Amazing controversy ensued.
The “Melin” issue has nearly torn the Board apart several times. I don’t have an opinion, except that I can’t make a judgement because most of the important conversations happened in personal emails that the Chicago Reader can’t release, and we’ll never have the whole story.
I hope my explanation is unbiased enough to keep teh peace. I don’t want to watch this happen again.
Melin was offended by someone’s (not a Straight Dope admin or mod) statement on the newsgroup misc.facts.straight-dope. The Straight Dope staff have NO authority in that newsgroup. Melin threatened to sue the Straight Dope, the Chicago Reader, and several mods/admins. Amazing controversy and hurt feelings all around.
I can see how Manhattan needs help lately, he’s all over the place moving and closing threads outside of his territory.
I thought you were acting a bit cocky lately Chronos. My first thought was, well, he’s been around for awhile and he’s just being helpfull after a long day (This was before the announcement). Then I run into this post.
Congrats and… ummm… well, I can’t imagine why you would want this job… but, GOOD LUCK!! Hope it’s all you expected.
As one poor moderator who has benefitted many times from Chronos’ help in providing links and explaining physics issues beyond the reach of this poor mortal, I welcome a fine intellect to the moderator group. Thank you in advance for your volunteer work, Chronos!
Well, congrats Chronos - they obviously didn’t want me to be a modertor.
BTW - how does one get on the “Straight Dope Science Advisory Board”? I mean, should the unlikely event happen of an issue about coal or coal power plants coming up, I would really like to see the SD people come up with any better resource than myself in the whole freaking World.
((I’m scrapping every last corner of my memory to remember if I have always been on good terms with Chronos or if we might have had some rub that I might not remember… If there ever was I hope he also doesn’t remember it…))
Hey Chronos, I always liked you! You know that, don’t you?
