Just in case anyone missed it: Jeffster opening the *Chuck *panel at Comic Con July 2009.
Jeffster will reportedly feature prominently in the season 3 finale.
I guess I have no taste in music, because I don’t see all the love for Jeffster. It’s possible, however, that this is colored by the fact that I’ve always thought Jeff and Lester are two of the most annoying characters inn this or any other show i watch.
Well, Jeffster doesn’t sound very good. That’s not the point at all. The great thing about Jeffster is:
-
They usually perform classic (more or less) songs from the 70’s and 80’s. They’ve performed Africa, Mr. Roboto, Fat Bottomed Girls, Fortunate Son, and Leaving On A Jet Plane. This is in keeping with a lot of the cultural references in the show. If you were young in that time (like me) the music stirs feelings of nostalgia. So the songs they choose seem to play to the target audience for Chuck.
-
They perform with such exuberance. It’s fun to watch. Here they are, a couple of losers (Jeff and Lester, not the actors) with not much going for them. But they perform as though they are Rock Stars. Haven’t you ever dreamed of being a rock star? These guys are living the dream… sort of.
In short, I like Jeffster because they are fun and goofy and play good songs.
As far as the characters themselves go, I like them. Vik Sahay plays the weasely Lester perfectly, IMO. I imagine it’s tough to play a character like that–you have to be entertainingly annoying and not just plain annoying. Your mileage obviously varies. I heard an interview with Scott Krinsky, who plays Jeff, and he was more like his character than I would have thought, in some ways! (But he seemed like a really nice guy and not sleazy like Jeff can be). They are both quite cartoonish, but that’s kind of what Chuck is–a live-action cartoon. I think the whole Buy More aspect of the show provides of lot of much-needed levity when the main characters and their story-arcs turn dark.
Jeffster isn’t a great band - they just sound okay, but when you’re expecting them to suck royally, sounding even okay makes you go, “hey, not bad!”
Plus, they rock. Loved the beatnik turtlenecks and the Lennon glasses. If you’re going unplugged, you might as well get into it.
I guess it was just a misunderstanding on my part; for some reason I interpreted all the Jeffster love as meaning that they were really good. I can certainly see the points made by Tangent and Sam Stone.
Oh, and while I never dreamed of being a rock star, I can categorically deny all the claims that I used to play air guitar in my younger days. Mainly because I only did it in private.*
*Well, there was that one time in college…but I’m pretty sure the witnesses were too drunk to remember it now.
