My boss recently gave to me a couple of beautiful cigar boxes from a cigar store she works at on the weekends. They are very nice, and I’d like to hear some unique ideas on how to possibly use them as decoration/display. I’d hate to just use them as storage for any old thing to get tossed in, gathering dust on a counter. They just seem deserving of something a little nicer. Something a little different.
There are two of them: one is a small, square box (held 20 cigars), and the other is flat and rectangular (held 25 cigars). They both have hinged lids and simple latches. They still have that cigar smell to them, which makes my husband smile in ecstasy. As much fun as it might be to let him sit around sniffing them all day, I still think I’d rather put them to some sort of use.
I’ve got a few of these myself; can’t decide what to do with them. I’ve been to a number of art fairs where they have purses made out of cigar boxes. I don’t think I will leave any of them “as is”. I will most likely decoupage (sp?) them.
There are some with clear plastic paper-hinged lids. You could do a shadowbox with that kind.
I have about 50 (from garage sales and the cigar store) around the top of my TV room, similiar to crown moulding. I’d take a pic and post it, if someone could explain to me how to do that. It’s taken me a while to amass a collection, and I still have a ways to go, but it looks nice.
I’m not very knowledgeable about plants or anything, but does anyone think they might make interesting planters of some sort? Maybe? I could grow some nice greenery or something in them, perhaps… hmm.
Thisis the smaller box, and this is the longer box (which needs to have the stickers removed still), if that helps anything. I especially like the smaller, square one.
Actually, and as a cigar smoker, I have seen many things done with the real wood cigar boxes. One of the things that looked really nice was to take the box and make a clock out of it. Simply buy the clock components and install them into the face of the box top.
Thias would look really great with a Hemingway Masterpiece box!
Oooooh, some of those are really nice! I might make one into a purse and use the other for a planter. I’m not sure which, though. The Cohiba purse looks nice on that site, and I’ve got a nice Cohiba box… but then I like the small one, and think I might be able to… and the Cohiba might be able to fit smaller, lower greenery…
Hmm. I’ll be mumbling to myself all day at work, now.
Naw, make a ukulele! Cut a sound hole, get a flat board for the neck, glue on toothpicks at the right places for frets, drill holes in the top and install some tuners, than strand on fishing line. Instant cool status!
…and let us not overlook the obvious: The “stuff” box. You can decoupage or paint the box and use it to keep your stuff in. Keys, pocket stuff, whatevah. My husband uses a “stuff” box. It’s ugly as all get-out. I need to make him one that doesn’t harsh my mellow.
I like your plant idea. You’d want to find a plastic container that fits in the box to contain the water. You could hide the container with decorative rocks. You’ll also need something with a shallow root system. Like cactus. Also, I think it would be neat to install a mirror on the inside of the lid, if the lid will stay verticle. Then you could see both sides of the plant at the same time. The rectangular one looks too shallow even for cactus though.
Maybe you could use the square one as a base for a small lamp? Do you have a guest room? And do you have guests come to stay (heh, my guest rooms have always turned into junk rooms) You could put some pretty soap or fancy condoms in there. Yeah, that’s it… glow in the dark condoms.
If you’d like to make your husband really go nuts, fill them up with cigars! Oh, the sniffing joy! (don’t let him smoke them though)
