Cingular Wireless web services question

I have a Cingular Wireless cell phone which offers web services. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to disable the web services on it?

I accidentally pressed the button for it last month, and even though I hit another key immediately, I was still charged four cents for downloading data. I don’t expect to use the web services so I want to disable it entirely.

You can go in and disable your GPRS host/gateway/access point. I don’t know what Cingular calls it. The deal is, if you use picture messaging or something like that, it won’t work.

SMS (text messages) will still work. There should be a setting in the phone for this setting, just delete it, but BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN WHAT IT SAYS THERE. I know when I worked for T-mobile, it was wap.voicestream.com or one of several others.

There might also be a “restore to factory settings” selection. That might bail you out, but I don’t know how Cinglular does their settings on the phones.

That didn’t make much sense, let me apoligize. You need to find your default GPRS gateway. This is kind of like where your modem on your computer dials into the wireless network. This is separate from what your phone uses to send voice calls and text messages.

There is going to be a setting that is an address most likely, like, WAP.CINGULAR.COM . Just delete this, but be sure to write down what it says. When it tries to access the network in your pocket on accident, there will be a message that says, "No Defualt Access Gateway Defined, " or something to that effect.

The phone should still function normally, with phone and voice. But if you have a camera phone, you won’t be able to to send any mulitimedia messages, like pictures, video, or sound… things like that.

If I knew which phone you had I could help you out a little less vaguely.

Thanks. It’s a Motorola Razr phone, if that helps.

I am looking around for a Motorola phone around my office here… if I find one I will give you a more or less step by step.

Anything to screw Cingular out of money. I had to buy my mother out of her contract…

Hey the only Motorola phone I could find was a Cingular Motorola V180, and Cingular has the software on the phone pretty tight. When I worked for T-Mobile, we sold that phone off and on and the software was much better for messing with it. The software for the V180 isn’t leaps and bounds different from the one on the V3 Razr, but I couldn’t find in there what I was trying get at to change the access points. I am sure that there is another Doper in here that has a Cingular V3 that can probably help you.

Try checking in the index of your book. It might say that the setting I was looking for was carrier specific, but hopefully not.

Sorry I couldn’t help you out more, man, but all of us in the office use Nokia phones that run on Symbian :smack:

Thank you anyhow. I appreciate the help.
