Quick factual question: How do I have an email sent to my Cingular wireless phone?

I need to have a message sent to my cell phone. I’ve just been on the phone with Cingular, but it’s a 10-minute wait before I can ask someone. Who, I asked myself, can provide a quicker answer? The Dopers can! I said to myself.

So how about it? I look to you.

I should have been more clear. What I’m really after is the address. I tried <number>@cingular.com and <number>@mobile.att.net but neither seemed to work.

Maybe try <number>@cingular.net
(just a wag)

It used to be <number>@mobile.att.net, but they changed it recently. Trythis:

All I ever got was spam …

You could have sent an email from your phone (for a charge, probably) to another email address, say your regular Internet account. The email of course contains the sender’s email address.

One problem is that it is not always clear how to send an email from a phone.

If your phone/plan doesn’t include “mobile internet” or whatever they call it, you need to use SMS to send/receive messages, and that means using a gateway.

For example, on my cingular phone, I can send a message to 121 that looks like this:

You may not know to send the message to 121 or what the format looked like unless you dug that info up on the website or from google.

I believe that newer phones have a “send email” command that works like “send message”, but it is automatically programmed to know what address to send to, so you just have to enter the email address and away you go.
