Circle of NFL players at end of game?

I just finished watching the NY Jets-Pittsburgh game, and right at the end of the telecast, they briefly showed a group of about 10 or so players gathering in a circle, kneeling, and holding hands with each other. What is this? Some kind of a weird prayer meeting or postgame get-together? I can understand if it might be a team-specific practice or ritual, but this circle had players from both teams in it…

I just saw that too. I struck me as odd that both teams would be in the circle. Not to mention that one’s teams prayers were not answered due to the fact that they lost.

One of the players lost a contact lens…

Perhaps you shouldn’t assume to know what other folks pray for?

Many athletes just pray for something like a safe game or that everyone can give their best effort etc…

Maybe you should pray for a sense of humor. That was a joke. Come back off the ledge ok buddy.

Yes, it’s probably a prayer of some sort. My semi-pro football team does this after every game.

The specific prayer varies, but we usually ask for a blessing on anyone who may have been hurt or injured, wishes for safe travel for the visiting team, that kind of thing.

I too saw the game and I quickly grabbed all my friends, we knelt in a circle, and prayed that some great and wise doper would explain this phenomenon to us. I can see now that our prayers were answered.

Some players in the NFL make a habit of holding a prayer huddle after each game. It is specifically meant to be held with members of both teams. You don’t often see it on TV at the end of the game, unless the player the TV crew is after for post-game comments goes to the prayer circle, and the cameraman follows him by mistake. It’s nothing new.

Here’s an article on some of the brouhaha surrounding prayer circles.

Nah . . . if it was a *weird * prayer meeting, they’d have been naked.
