Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes

Well, I heard a song in a beer commercial that I liked enough that I felt like I had to hunt it down.

After discovering the band Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, I did a search here and didn’t find any Dopers discussing the band so I’ll start. I’m just now working my way through YouTube videos. I know nothing of the band’s biography, but after listening to a few songs on YouTube I am going to now check out their website.

They do female vocal group harmonies over a funk/soul band arrangement. When I first searched the lyrics of the song after seeing the beer commercial, I found the song mistakenly attributed to Amy Winehouse by a few amateur sources. A comparison to Winehouse isn’t completely out of line, but I think this band has more of a 60s kind of a feel to what they’re doing (in the very little that I’ve heard from them so far.)
As a female vocal group, I first wanted to know if they were just the product of a svengali-type producer or if they were a band driving their own creative vision. Finding a few live videos, it looks very much like they are a solid band doing their own thing. Looks like a consistent 9 piece: 4 female vocalists (so far seems like one is the solid lead vocalist) with the same 5 guys as the band.

Here’s the beer commercial

Here’s the official video for the full song: “Love Letter”

Here’s a stripped down live record store performance of the same song.

Here’s the song I just finished listening to (another live performance): “Vicious Cycle”

Here’s the song I have playing in a background tab right now (another live performance): “She Plays Up to You”
They’re pretty good. I’d like to hear if anyone here knows of them/ knows more about them. I’m going to read a bit on their website now. They don’t have an AllMusic.com page- which I was hoping for. No Wiki page either.

I’ve listened to a few more songs on YouTube and, yeah, I see myself buying their album when I get my next paycheck. They’re pretty good.

The “About” section on their website reads like a press release (which is what I’d expect) which is why I was hoping there’d be a AllMusic.com page. Seems they’re Australian and have been together only a few years. One EP, one full length album.
